Reasons why adab is essential:

A Pre-requisite for the Blessing of Knowledge (Barakah): Many scholars believe that knowledge without adab is devoid of barakah (blessing). Adab is seen as the vessel that holds and preserves the benefit of the knowledge acquired. Without it, the knowledge may not be beneficial in this world or the next.

Guards Against Arrogance: Seeking knowledge naturally elevates one's status, but without proper manners and humility (a key aspect of adab), it can lead to arrogance. Adab ensures that the student remains humble, recognizing that true knowledge and wisdom come from God, and that they are always learning. As the saying goes, "Knowledge is a light from God, and God does not grant His light to a sinner," which includes the sin of arrogance.

Foundation for Practical Application: Adab acts as a "boundary or fence" for practicing one's knowledge in daily life. A person with vast knowledge but poor character is unlikely to use that knowledge for good or to benefit society. Adab actualizes the knowledge into positive actions and character (akhlaq).

Respect for Teachers and Sources: A central part of adab is showing deep respect, humility, and reverence for one's teachers, scholars, and the sources of knowledge. This respect is believed to be vital for truly grasping and benefiting from the teaching. Disrespect can hinder the transfer of knowledge and its spiritual benefit.

1. Hadith Jibril

The dialogue begins with Gabriel asking the Prophet: "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam."

The Prophet Muhammad (\text{PBUH}) replied with the description of the Five Pillars. At the conclusion of the Hadith, the Prophet revealed the identity of the questioner to his companion Umar, saying: "That was Gabriel. He came to teach you your religion."

This highlights the Hadith's purpose: to establish and teach the fundamental core principles of the faith.

2. The Five Pillars of Islam

The Prophet's answer to the question "What is Islam?" defines the Five Pillars of Islam which are the foundational and obligatory acts of worship that a Muslim must perform. They are the external framework of the faith.
