This crisis is not only at the fault of teachers, but also students as well.  Both are responsible for making a nurturing and safe environment for those who are both suffering from mental illness or have the possibility of suffering from it. If you show students that they can trust their teachers and counselors, then students will use them and speak to them. People in general seem to fear, bully, and avoid individuals who have these mental health issues due to the stigmatization of it. Due to this the school systems should seriously consider to start mental health classes in the 5th grade and all throughout high school. These classes should address "Strategies that promote a schoolwide positive environment." (2) They also need to do a better job of promoting a nurturing and safe school environment by "Cultivating student self-discipline and respect for others."
