Defense Mechanisms within the film ‘Stay’ by Kyla Pamujac

One of my favorite films is Stay (2005) dir. Marc Forster, which follows the story of a psychiatrist, Sam, and his struggle to understand his new patient, Henry. [Spoilers ahead…] The film follows Henry’s mental health descent, but as the viewer, we are not sure if what he says is true. He claims to Sam that he murdered his parents, yet his mother is still alive. It seems that there is a contradiction between reality and Henry’s claims- but his final claim is that he will attempt suicide, so Sam must find a way to stop him. Meanwhile, as the viewer, we are shown many interesting and unusual details, with sometimes odd or sporadic editing choices, contributing to the overall sense that we may not be able to trust the narrator.

Henry’s Denial of Reality

Through out the film, we are shown hints and glimpses of what the true reality is- which is that the reality that has been shown so far is not real. It is all in Henry’s mind as he dies from a car accident. Henry denies his own impending death by creating a world where he is alive and can see his loved ones again. He also denies responsibility for causing the car accident.

Henry is not actually Henry

The characters in the film, which are actually figments of Henry’s dream state as he is dying, are projections of Henry’s life and feelings. Internally, Henry feels despair and depressed, so the characters reflect this. He has projected his insecurities onto Sam, who has a depressed failing artist as a girlfriend whom he supports financially and emotionally, reflecting Henry in real life situation except that Henry is in the same position as the dream girlfriend of his psychiatrist.

The plot is repression

As the viewer, you do not learn this until the end but the entire story thus far is a cumulative repression of the car accident memory. He is burying the memory of the crash and the despair and anguish along with it in order to live a reality in his mind where he is alive. Instead of dying, he is living with suicidal ideation, but in this reality someone is trying to help him and he can be comforted by this. He shoots himself in the dream world in time with dying in the real world after the crash.
