Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

This stage is ultimately the most important stage in my development. This is where a child can learn to trust their parents or caregivers. During this time, a baby is completely reliant on its caregivers to provide and sustain them. This is when you learn to trust that you will be provided food, comfort and love. "Baby develops sense of whether world is a good and safe place."

"During this stage, child will develop a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt."
This is a time when praise and encouragement from parents is crucial. During this stage of development, children need to be able to do things by themselves and be encouraged to do so. If their independence is hindered, they will become doubtful of their abilities.

This is again another critical development stage for toddlers and preschool age children. During this stage, they are gaining their independence and taking the initiative to be self-sufficient. Encouragement from parents and teachers will allow them to make goals for themselves to attempt to achieve.

This stage during ages 6-11, children develop the sense of their individuality. During this time, they will feel either accomplished and competent, or they will feel inferior. They will seek out the praise of their parents or teachers for their actions which will result in either the competency or the inferiority feeling.

Identity vs. Identity Confusion

This stage is a confusing and complicated time for both the child (now adolescent) and the caregivers. The child is trying to figure out "who they are" and what their role is in the world. As a parent, I find this to be the absolute hardest stage of development. Parents want their children to develop their own idea of self, yet parents sometimes try to mold children into what they hope for them to be. Children often try to compare themselves to their peers which gives conflicting identities crises if it doesn't mesh with who they really are.

This stage is where the person develops positive intimate relationships, or if they lack the skills necessary to form relationships, they will find themselves more isolated and lonelier. They may also suffer from "self-absorption" where they would not have deep feelings for others besides themselves.

I will call this the "midlife crisis" part of development. At this point, a person will be examining their life thus far and see if they are where they had hoped they are. If not, it can lead to some extreme life changes. They may look to see if they have created anything worthwhile to leave behind in the world.

This stage of development is where they reflect on what they have done and see if they have fulfilled what they have wanted, or they will become bitter with the fact that they did not do all they wanted, and death is approaching soon.
