This was our first movie project in AICE Media Studies. My group made a movie based on bullying; our characters included Lily (Victim), Matt (Bully), Sophia (Bully’s friend), and Claire (Director and Camera). The story consists of Lily getting bullied and the story line of how Sophia and Lily become friends and shut down Matt for being so mean to Lily. We also included Sophia and Lily having a series conversation when Matt disrupts and decides to shame both because now Sophia is hanging out with Lily who he bullied.
Some of the positive feedback that we received included our editing skills, bolded credits, depth in our shots, camera angles, and how easy the story/plot was able to follow. Some of the things we were told needed improvement included out sound, acting/laughing, adding zooming into the person who is talking, and to do more over the shoulder shots so you get more perspective.

Film Remake and Reflection

For this assignment, we were asked to recreate a film that another group had created a few weeks prior. We spent a few weeks studying different camera movements and shots and then we recreated it to see how much our camera skills improved. We had to rewrite/improve the script, and we had to have 10 or more different types of shots and camera movements.
The name of the film we were recreating is "The Stalker." The original groups plot was a young high school girl who was being stalked and after finally realizing she had a stalker, a group of her friends beat the stalker up. We improved our remake by adding more suspense to the plot by adding music and different camera movements that were portrayed at creepy/nerve wracking. We also, had her tell her friends about the stalker and they helped her to try to find a solution to her problem. The ten or more shot/movement types that we used included depth, extreme close up, high angle shot, long shot, low angle shot, low angle shot, over the shoulder shot, pan left or pan right, POV shot, three shot, tilt up or tilt down, track in, two shot, wide shot, and zoom in or zoom out. In the remake of this film, I was the director and the camera person.
There were many things that went very well, but some other things that we definitely could have improved on. Some of the things that were good included the camera movements/shots, color/depth, plot(was easy to understand), and the acting. Some things that could be improved on was the sound quality with being outside everything echo's and makes it hard to hear. We could also have shown more perspective of other actors when someone was talking.
The POV shot added a lot to our film. When the stalker was filming from his perspective you were able to see exactly what he was looking at and where he was stalking her from. This added suspense because you could tell when he was getting closer or farther away from her. Another shot that we used very well was panning. There were a lot of times we used panning and it always seemed to show something important. When we panned from the girls downstairs to the stalker up on the balcony you got a lot of depth from that shot. A third shot that was used well was the low angle shot. When the stalker puts the cloth over her face and we are then looking at the stalker from a low angle it gives a lot suspense to what he is going to do next.

Genre and Representation Reflection

The genres that we covered in class this past week included Biographies, Sports, Sci-fi, YA, Musicals, Romances, Comedy, Dramas, History, War, Superheroes, Documentaries, Family, Animation, Horror, Thriller, Crime, Adventure, Fantasy, and Mystery. We studied the conventions, codes, and the audience experiences, as we learned about all of the genres listed above. With conventions we focused on characters and what they represent, along with setting, and values. Codes we learned about the different cinematic elements that each genre uses depending on what they are trying to portray. The audience experience we reflected on how they might feel and react as they watch a certain genre. Some of the films that we watched were hybrid, this meaning the film combined traditional documentary techniques along with some non-traditional approaches.
The first film that my group made was "The Bully". The genre of this film that we created would be Young Adult/Drama. Conventions in this film would include the main character the bully (Matthew F.), the high school girl being bullied (Lily), and the girls friend (Sophia). The setting took place in the high school, where all of the bullying of Lily was taking place. Codes that we used in this was where we edited out what the person was saying and added a voice recording of what the girl was thinking inside her head, but wasn't saying out loud. The audience should have reacted in a personal way of being able to relate to what was happening with this high school girl and her friends. The second movie that we filmed "The Stalker" was in the horror genre. Conventions in this film would include the characters the stalker (Matthew), the girl being stalked (Lily), and best friends of the girl being stalked (Isabella and Sophia). The setting of the school made the film more creepy because it is taking place somewhere that is very common for kids to be hanging around. Conventions that were portrayed included high angle shots to show the power that the stalker had over the girl he was stalking. We also used POV shots so you could see what the different characters point of views were. The audience should have experienced suspense, of what was going to happen next in the stalker situation. In learning more about genres and what each one should represent, we would be able to improve the conventions, codes, and audience experiences in these films.
For my pitch for our end of the year film I want to create a film that is in the horror genre. My idea would be a high school teacher who stalks some of her students inside and outside of school. For example, at football games, in class, at home, and even at activities with friends. Conventions for characters would be a high school teacher, administration at the school, and students. You would expect to feel suspense and confusion of why the teacher is stalking her students and what is going to be the outcome of this. At the end of the film the teacher could either kidnap her students or it could end in the students realizing what has been going on and them getting the police involved. There would be a lot of point of view shots and high angle to show authority and what is really going on from different peoples perspectives.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Final

In the months of November and December, in AICE Media Studies, we focused a lot on editing, sound, and the screenwriting/screenplay format. We watched a film about the editing of movies and how important the role of an editor is in the overall film process. The movie we watched was called "The Cutting Edge", and it was excellently done to show you so many different ways to edit. We created documents showing 20 different types of editing techniques. For example, montages, match cuts, jump cuts, subliminal cuts, and smash cuts. We also watched a movie, "Making Waves", about cinema sound. Sound in movies can change the emotion and the way you portray the whole entire movie. For learning about screenwriting/screenplay we read "The Incredibles" script. After we finished learning about how to write a script, we wrote our own 2 minute horror film opening with somebody having a nightmare, for our midterm film project.

For our midterm film, we had many requirements including, one to two minutes of length, horror or horror hybrid, an "opening" rather than a finished film product, minimal dialogue (mostly music/sound effects), no wall-to-wall- music, no long takes, start in black with company ident and/or logo and title (optional credits), straight cut or dissolve to first image, minimum of three crosscuts between the actor and their nightmare, edited/shot/uploaded, accompanied by a blog post.
Our midterm film also but include one close up, one dutch angle, one high or low angle, one low key light set up or one silhouette, one pan or tilt or track/push or spin round, one zoom or dolly zoom, one subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut, one match cut, one J cut or L cut, one use of slow or fast motion, one intentional use of color for story/emotion, one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, one instance of visual complexity in setting choice, three sound effects, one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. If we wanted any extra credit point we could include: quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shots, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, intentional break of the fourth wall, intentional break of the rule of thirds, rack focus or pull focus shot, intentional use of handheld camera work, use of color filters to create a dream like quality, fisheye lens or fisheye effect, and a company logo with high quality graphic.

      Section 3:
a. The ways that I adhered to horror conventions is by including a nightmare. Bella is having a nightmare that she breaks her ankle right before she is going to leave to perform her final dance performance. I adhered to horror codes by using subliminal cuts and high pitched sound effects. In the film, there is an ankle snapping sound effect when Bella falls and breaks her ankle. I adhered to the audiences expectations and engagement by confusion and suspense. Suspense is gained because she is doing the dances good in the beginning, then starts to forget, and at the end completely falls and breaks her ankle.

b. The ways I broke horror conventions in my film is there wasn't a lot of violence. My film was more a nightmare for a dancer, where a film with a lot of violence would be a scary nightmare for anyone. I broke horror codes in my film because there wasn't a lot of different lighting. The room that we filmed in had huge windows which made the room extremely bright and hard to edit any other color or lighting into it. I broke the conventions for audience expectations and engagement by there not being a lot of anticipation and it being more of a story line till the end where she finally breaks her ankle.

c. The people that I represented here would be any dancer young child or adult whos whole life and passion is dance. For them falling and breaking their ankle could destroy their dancing career for good. Just like when a sports player gets injured, they are risked at not being to play ever again. The same thing goes for a dancer. The idea I represented was someone losing the chance to perform or do a career with the activity they love due to an injury.

      Section 4:
a. There were many of things that were successful with my movie. Some of those things include the editing, filming, acting, dialogue, and overall experience. I thought that filming the movie and putting it all together would be challenging, but it was the easiest and most fun part about it. When editing the most difficult part was being able to figure out where to put some music and sound effects. The sound effects needed to fit in and not stand out too much during the film. Another thing that I would say was successful was the lack of dialogue, which was one of our requirements. I thought that the movie wouldn't flow with not having much dialogue, but I think it makes the overall story flow better and makes it more interactive and fun to watch.

b. The least successful thing in my film was really getting the horror aspect across. Yes, my film is a nightmare for any dancer or someone who has had an experience like it, but for other people this wouldn't be as much as a nightmare. I wanted to do this type of horror film because I felt that it would be different than any other film with people being chased around and scared. Another unsuccessful part was getting all of the camera angles that I needed. When filming I thought that I got them all, but when you start editing I realized that there were a few scenes that didn't portray the camera angle as good as I thought it was going to. For example, I filmed a POV shot, but looking at it after it may be hard to figure that it was that type of shot.

c. During the filming of this horror film I used my different types of hardware and software. ArcStudio was the software that I used to write my script. This is a free app that makes it very easy for you to write a script and have different fonts and sizes for dialogue, character, action, and transitions. When shooting my movie, I filmed it on my iPhone camera. I think the quality would be better on a real camera, but on my phone it does have pretty good quality. Premiere Pro is the software I used to edit my movie. I chose to use this because I certified in Premiere Pro last year when I took TV Production. I like using this software because it is easy to locate stuff on the app and gives you a lot of options for sound effects and editing. YouTube is where I got all of my sound effects (snoring, clapping, and snapping of a bone). The logo that I made and inserted at the beginning of my film was made on Adobe Logo Maker. You just have to put in the type of company you have and the name and it generates a bunch of different logos.

Film Analysis

1. A one or two sentence description of the first two minutes. What happens?
The movie opens up with the ocean and waves, with the credits rolling over the images. The camera continues to move till it reaches Queen Elizabeth 2, a huge yacht, cruising through the water. Then it shows the title The Parent Trap with colorful fireworks shooting off in the background. There are just a bunch of random tasks being shown with credits rolling over the images and a song playing in the background.

2. What is the genre and who is the target audience for this film?
The genre for this film is dramedy, a combination of drama and comedy. The target audience for this film is children to young adult, ages 6-20.

3. 3. Describe the opening credits and title sequences, including any company logos or idents. When do they appear? What color/font are they using? How does it "align" with the opening of the film? Anything else you notice?
The opening credits (actors and actresses), production company name, and title sequences are all shown right when the movie starts. The font of the title sequences and credits are very thin and elegant looking. I think that it aligns with the film very well because the credits are over a very simple opening, this making it all come together. What is played in the background is important, but also gives you the opportunity to read the credits. I like the way it all looks put together.

3. Describe it visually -- a shot by shot breakdown that includes type of shot/movement, if any?
    1. track right, depth
    2. camera moving, people moving
    3. spin around, fast motion
    4. zoom out, color
    5. color and depth, medium shot
    6. fast motion
    7. people moving forward, camera moving backward
    8. long shot, boom up
    9. over the shoulder shot
    10. over the shoulder shot
    11. medium shot
    12. track right, color
    13. over the shoulder
    14. over the shoulder
    15. cuts to black screen with Walt Disney pictures presents
    16. zoom in, color and depth

4. 4. Describe the sound -- a "sound by sound" analysis of the entire first two minutes.
In the beginning it is a light happy song playing, until the music goes deeper when a serious subject is brought up. The music starts to pick up and get faster when there is a very important moment about to occur. Once the big secret is revealed, the music changes to a louder upbeat song. The music then picks up and gets faster and more intense when a problem occurs. When it gets to the big part everyone has been waiting for the music is very instrumental, loud, and happy sounding. There is also dialogue over all of this music and sound, but the dialogue is heard clearly.

5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes. Did you want to know more? What was left hanging, if anything? What questions do you still have?
I think the first two minutes of the trailer give you a pretty good idea of what is going on. It shows you the main ideas of the movie, but leaves you hanging on what they are going to do after discovering those main ideas. Also, it shows you what problems occur but now how or if they get figured out. I wanted to know more about what was going to happen, but for a trailer that it what you want because then you will go watch the movie when it comes out. I don't really have any questions, overall I thought it was a very good first 2 minutes of a trailer.

6. How would you describe the editing style in this clip? Any particular editing techniques you noticed, or length of shots?
One editing style I noticed was them putting fast motion in between different shots. For example, there being two people have a conversation, cutting to a car going by quickly, then to two different people having a conversation. I liked this editing technique because it adds depth. All the shots were pretty quick, the only ones that had some length to it was when serious conversations where being had.

7. How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions?
The dialogue adhered to conventions in this movie. The dialogue had some serious and upsetting moments, where other moments were very funny and humorous. The set also adhered to conventions. I think when you have a dramedy you would expect a lot of depth and coloring, which this set had a lot of. The lighting adhered to conventions.

8. How did these first two minutes break with conventions?
There were some lighting moments that broke conventions. There was some low key lighting that took place, making it seem scary when in reality it was just a serious conversation. There was also a location down in a cellar that look creepy as if it would be a location in a horror movie.

9. How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?
For people it represented complicated family relationships. This movie could touch a lot of people in a sentimental way because they might be going through what the twins are going through in this movie. Not knowing who there mom or dad is or even knowing if they have another sibling out there. It did show issues that occurred, but it didn't go into depth on them.

10. Why do you think this film was originally distributed in the way that it was?
I think it was distributed in this way because of its target audience. This move is definitely made for kids, it has some comedy, but also some serious moments. By making the trailer the way that they did, it made the people watching it want to go and watch the full movie.

11. EXTRA CREDIT: Any other thoughts or comments or realizations you had about film openings after viewing this clip?
After watching this film opening, I realized that leaving cliff hangers is a really good way to make people interested. Also, by playing upbeat instrumental music in the background it keeps the trailer flowing and more entertaining.

She is off and on the hunt to figure out more about her family.

One change that my group made to our script was who the biological parents of the high school aged girl was going to be. We originally had Angelina Jolie, but with the suggestion from our instructor we decided to change it to Jeffery Dahmer and Whitney Houston as her parents. The reason we decided to make this change was because by making the father someone bad and the mother someone good it adds the shock factor and drama but also the comedy factor. It makes the overall ending of our film better and more interesting.
A consideration that we made was to decide to take some of the dialogue out. We kept in the script, but once we film we are going to see if we should keep the voiceover dialogue or move on without it. The reason we would do this would be because the action might be enough to get the point across better then having a voiceover explaining it.

Cinematographers:

Some lighting considerations that we are going to want to think about is conventions for a dramedy movie with lighting. When comedy is taking place you would think of bright lighting because it is happy, where if it is a dramatic, sad scene taking place the light might be more dim. I think in our movie the use of natural sunlight is what we will use the most. Sunlight gives off good shadowing and effects for this genre. A way we will accomplish this is by either filming outside (which some of our film is) and when filming inside being by a big open window where natural sunlight is coming in.

While filming we may need to use some sort of microphone as our sound equipment. When we film our scenes outside you have to be careful because you can hear more than you think. There may be a garbage truck in the background that you wouldn't think would impact you, when in reality it then takes away from what you actors are saying because it is so loud. With the use of a microphone you can avoid the risk of this happening. Also, to make sure there is not backup noise before saying action you can say "sound" or "quiet on set" to make sure that there is no noise taking place that will disturb the sound in the film. This stuff is important to take into consideration because without good sound quality, your movie is not nearly as good as it could be.

Shot List Breakdown by location and scene:
1. location - kitchen (sitting down at table mom, dad, brother, high school aged girl) - 4 different shots: (medium shots, two shots, over the shoulder shots, wide shot) there will be different takes to get different angles of the conversations
2. location - outside house (mailbox) - 2 different shots: (POV shot (opening of mailbox), long shot) we will also put a camera in the mailbox to see the actors expression when she opens it and looks in
3. location - house (inside bedroom) - 3 different shots: (long shot, POV shot, medium shot) different takes and shots will be taken. there will also be different angles to put depth into the shots.

1. One way would do it is by promoting it as early as possible. If you can get it out to the world and people start showing interest in it, is a huge start. If you can show distribution companies that you have an audience that is waiting to view your movie you have a good chance of them helping you. Getting a film distributor is always a good idea because they can help guide you through the tough process. Even if you might not need that much help, you still get the extra support because distributing a movie is not an easy process. Streaming is huge with our movie. Our target audience all uses streaming platforms, making streaming a huge part of our process.

2. The title for our film is "The Truth". In my opinion, I think that this title is a great fit for our movie because it gives you an idea about what it might be about. For example, when you see this title you may think that its going to be about a secret that the truth is going to come out on. That is basically what the main plot of film is. I think that this name will grab the attention of our target audience. The truth coming out sometimes brings drama and since our target audience is young girls and young girls "love" drama, it will catch their attention. I think the only way it could be improved on would be by saying something about family, but I also feel like that would be giving too much of the story away. I think this title is short, sweet, and straight to the point.

3. "Sometimes, the truth coming out isn't the best option."

4. The target audience for our movie are women from the age of 13-25. The reason for this target audience is the genre dramedy is more of a girl genre and also the main character is a girl making the story more relatable to a girls life. Most of the people watching this are going to be teenagers who attend high school/college, but also may have a part time job at for say a boutique or restaurant. The social media platforms that our target audience will most likely be on would be Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube. All these platforms are places where young girls like to spend their time communicating. This target audience is most likely watching TV series on Netflix and other streaming platforms with the genres comedy and drama because those are genres that our target audience prefers. Places that they might be shopping would include Target, boutiques, and all of the popular stores in the mall. Anything that teenagers and young adults do with their friends are also things that make our target audience different from for say a horror movies target audience.

5. From the information that I gathered from the question above, I think that reaching our target audience could be fairly simple if we do the right things. I think one place to advertise would be Youtube. The reason why I think that this would be a good place is because our target audience spends a lot of time on this platform. They spend their time watching their favorite youtubers and following other favorite celebrities. Also, Tiktok is a great place to advertise for our movie because the majority of our target audience uses this app several of times a day.
Ten places we would advertise:
Six Virtual - YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Movie Theaters, Online stores (pop up messages)
Four Nonvirtual - Stores/Boutiques in the mall, Restaurants, Places teens go out (bowling, movie theaters, mini golf), around high school/college campus
If we had to self distribute these would be the places we would most likely advertise. The reason for these places is because these are the places and platforms that are target audience enjoy and visit daily.

6. To engage our target audience online we would promote our film on websites and places that our target audience enjoys. For example, a pop up ad on a store like American Eagle or Hollister because those are places that are target audience likes to shop at. You could talk to the stores and see if they repost the film trailers or posters, they get free shipping on their next purchase. This is a reason for them to spend money at the store, giving them business, but also sharing information about our film. You are getting them to click on your ad's because it is an incentive for them to then get free shipping on their next purchase.

7. When we design our movie poster we would use a very elegant, pretty, and bold font. We would also pick colorful and girly colors that would attract our target audience. To make sure it is familiar with our target audience we will make sure we are using colors that other movies with the same genre are using. To keep our movie poster fresh, we will keep it relatively simple. In my opinion, movie posters that say less but are more colorful are the ones that I am drawn to more than ones with a lot of words and dull coloring. Two or three main colors we would use would include white, light pinks, and blues. These are neutral and soft colors that won't overpower anything, but also will draw attention. Iconography that could be used would be a birth certificate. This would tell the audience a little something about the movie and what it is about without giving away the specifics of the film.

8. By having a great title is one way that makes marketing easy for our genre. When marketing having a great title is important. For example, "Mean Girls". When teenagers and young adults saw this title on a poster or trailer they immedently found interest in it. It is a title that leads many to believe they will relate to it because the age group deals with "mean girls" on the daily.

Production and Editing Reflection

One thing that I learned during the production process of filming a movie is all of the changes and edits you have to make not only to the way you think the movie is going to go, but the setting, dialogue, and characters. One thing we changed during the editing process, is adding zooms, music, and text. We originally didn't have the text, but by adding it, it clarified and made the scene more understandable. Feedback that was given after people watching our first cut was that the opening scene went by too fast and was a little confusing. When we shot our second take we decided to use different angles and shots and also added more precise dialogue to make it more understandable. We changed this because it looked much better once we did this since before it was very confusing. I think by fixing this and by adding text, music, and more dialogue it makes our overall movie flow and look better.
