My opinions have changed because before I thought that citizenship depended on if you were born here or not. Something I didn't know about before that I know about now is that the two most popular civil rights fighters were Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. and people usually supported one or the other or neither. Malcolm X had a more violent approach to the situation whereas Martin Luther King Jr. in essence was more like Gandhi because he was more peaceful. I now realize that that only applies now because of the 14th Amendment. Back then the Naturalization Act restricted citizenship to mostly white men and we have come a long way since then. I saw how we have progressed so much since 1795. Every act and amendment passed was like another step on the large staircase to equal rights. Even though we have come a LONG way we still see inequality today. It has lessened a lot but women still are not paid as much as women and are still not given equal rights. We are yet to have our first female president. We also see people being discriminated against because of their race (racial stereotypes.) Overall this unit has helped me reflect and realize how far we have come.

We have seen that when people don't like the way they are being treated they have always stood up for themselves. Usually they do this by hosting rallies and parades. A good example of this is LGBTQ+ parades. I have witnessed one myself and they really are the most spectacular things. People from the same community come together and it shows the unity we could have with each other if we overlook stereotypes and injustice. Although I enjoyed that, you could also see that people really wanted their rights and were done being discriminated against. Most of the protests and parades end up being violent but maybe if we actually listened to each other we would see that they are simply asking for basic rights, something we were born with.
