Many health care facilities require that you wear uniforms, also known as scrubs. You should always make sure that these uniforms are ironed in order to be free of wrinkles. They should also be neat, clean, and well fitting. It is important that you learn the type and color of the uniform that is required or permitted. Make sure and follow the uniform standards of the health care facility.

Some health care facilities prefer that you wear regular clothing in place of a uniform. Make sure the clothing you wear is neat, clean and in good condition. The articles of clothing you wear should allow for freedom of body movement and should be appropriate for the job you are doing. Also make sure whatever clothing you choose to wear follows the dress standards of the facility you work in. For example, some facilities may consider a certain clothing piece to be inappropriate. As a health care worker, it is important to always wear washable fabrics, as frequent laundering may be necessary based on your tasks.

Most health care facilities require workers to wear a name badge or a photo identification tag at all times. A badge will usually state your name, title, and the department you are working in. In certain health care facilities, such as a long-term care facility, workers are required by law to wear identification badges at all times. A health care facility's security may require photo identification in order to get into the building or certain areas within the facility.

Frequently in a health care facility, white shoes made of a non-absorbent material (such as leather) are required for workers to wear. However, several health care careers allow other kinds of shoes. These shoes should fit well and provide good support to the worker in order to prevent fatigue. Avoid wearing high heels and go for shoes with lower heels, as these will prevent fatigue and accidents. Make sure the shoes you choose to wear are closed toes to ensure safety. Your shoes and shoelaces should also be cleaned frequently.

As a health care worker, you should always make sure your hair is kept neat and clean. It should be neatly styled and easy to care for. Make sure to avoid extreme hairstyles or too many hair accessories. If your career requires close contacts with patients, make sure your hair is tied back. This will keep it from being distracting, getting caught in equipment, or landing on the patient. A plus side of keeping your hair up is that it will keep you cooled down while you're working.

Most health care facilities do not allow jewelry because it can cause injury to the patient and spread germs or pathogens. It can also be a distraction. Exceptions are sometimes allowed for watches, wedding rings, and small earrings. Medical bracelets for things such as diabetes or heart disease are always permitted. Be sure to avoid hoop or dangling earrings, as well as piercings on the tongue, eyebrows, or nose. These are permitted in many health care facilities.

Wearing excessive and unnatural makeup in the work place should be avoided, as this can make you appear to be very unprofessional. If you choose to wear makeup, make sure it is minimal and natural looking. Visible or offensive tattoos should be covered up at all times so that it does not take away from having a professional appearance. Some facilities require that all tattoos be covered up by clothing at all times. However, medical alert tattoos are permitted in all situations.

Personal Characteristics

Not only is it important to look professional, but it is also important to act professional. One important characteristic that shows professionalism is empathy. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand someone's feelings and situation. With empathy you are able to connect and support someone who is in a tough situation. I feel that this is an important characteristic to have, especially in a health care facility. You will come across patients who may be sick or dealing with a sick family member and it is important to make them feel that they are not alone. Another important characteristic to have is honesty. To be honest is to show integrity and to be truthful in all of your doings. It is important for your patients and coworkers to be able to trust you and depend on you. You should also be willing to admit to your mistakes and correct them. It is also important to become a team player in your health care facility. You must learn to work well with all your coworkers, as you and them are part of a team. You should make sure to keep up with all your responsibilities and complete them in a timely matter. You should also be sure and provide each patient with quality care. By working as a team with your coworkers, you each will accomplish your goals faster and successfully.
