- 6-40 stems grow clumped from the base of the shrub
- stems are often crooked and lean
- alternate, roughly toothed, oval, 2-5 inch long leaves that turn orange to red or purple in the fall 
- nuts grow in tight clusters of up to 15 at the branch tips
- nuts are hard shelled, smooth, light brown when ripe
- each nut is wrapped in a pair of ruffled leaves with sticky hairs OR tapering tube/ "beak" with tiny spines (Corylus cornuta)
