    • Before the Battle of Gettysburg the battles were fought in the South and the Battle of Gettysburg was fought on Northern soil, giving them an advantage and morale boost. After the battle the South could no longer threaten the North because they could not fight in the North due to lack of resources.

    • Represents the North solidifying their winning side of the war
    • Represented the South losing their ability to threaten the North
  • What subsequent important events did it directly lead to that would not have happened otherwise?
    • Lee’s army retreating from their attack on Washington
    • Grant’s invasion of Virginia and him eventually taking Richmond.

  • Battle of Gettysburg set the precedent for the south declining towards ending the war

    • If the Battle of Gettysburg had not occurred then the confederate soldiers would have been far more powerful since Lee’s army wouldn't have gotten defeated by the Union and they wouldn't be as exhausted and damaged.

Before that, Atlanta served as a manufacturing, supply, and strategic hub for the Confederacy, and was key to the Confederacy’s battle plans. 
- It represented the strict grip the south had over its territory and when it fell, symbolized the advancement of the north, and foreshadowed northern victory.
- It eventually cut off a main Confederate supply center and influenced the Federal presidential election of 1864. It heightened Northern morale and is said to have been a reason for Abe Lincoln to have been reelected
- It represented a pattern of northern victory, and northern advancement to the confederate territory, and was a turning point in the way that the union would eventually capture Savannah, and continue their sweep of strategic confederate hubs in the south. 
- If this event did not happen, then the decline of the Confederacy may not have happened and it would have made them stronger. During this the Union burned down all of the confederate supplies in Atlanta, this made them weaker and the Union gained strength and had the upper hand in the war. The south had already seceded before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation but this just fed fuel to the wildfire of tension between the North and South. On top of that, all slaves in America were declared free but in reality, slaves that were under southern control weren't free. Furthermore, hundreds of thousands of slaves flee north for freedom and many contribute to war efforts.

It represented the North’s view of slavery and their perspective on why they were fighting the war.

 The Thirteenth Amendment. Black Americans were allowed to serve in the war

pattern that emerges during the war?
 
It was the first and the most powerful action against slavery, and it was imposed upon all of the country including the south. It pushed the north’s point of view of slavery, leading to the civil war.

Counterfactual: if this event DID NOT happen, then how would this have had a dramatic impact on the course of the war?
 
If this event did not occur, the war was still inevitable but the degree of motivation between the north and south wouldn’t be as high as it was if the Emancipation Proclamation did occur. The Emancipation Proclamation angered the south and would have had a bigger impact on the South’s motivation to fight. Also, the african americans that served in the war would not have served since there wasn't the official proclamation that allowed them to serve in the war for the northern military. After many generals who did not live up to the expectations that Lincoln had, Grant was appointed after his many, many successes in the west. He came to the east with new battle strategies compared to the people before him which was using his men to his advantage and being relentless. There were way more casualties for the Union, but he fought General Lee through the state of Virginia and did not stop.
