In May of 1942, was considered to be the first air-sea battle in history. The Japanese planned to take control of the Coral Sea with an invasion. This took place in Southeast New Guinea in Port Moresby. Japanese made the first attack from their aircraft carrier planes causing damage to several other carriers. But, the Allied fleet had already learned enough about the communication and was able to discern the planes in time, resulting in a Allied victory. The Japanese covering force was led by Vice Admiral Takagi Takao and Admiral Frank J. Fletcher commanded American task forces. This sea battle was to later impact the Battle of Midway.

Set up in the Manhattan district with factories collecting fissile nuclear materials and developing weapons. Two weapons were made including The Thin Man, a gun based nuclear weapon and a simpler version, Little Boy. The project had been in secret throughout the time until soviet spies discovered the project.

All the while Einstein was not directly responsible for the creation of the Atomic bomb, his Special Theory of Relativity that declared A large amount of energy could be released from a small amount of matter (E=mc2) helped tremendously in development of the abomb. However, the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany -- in fear the Germans might be constructing a bomb of their own, influenced Eisenstein to send a letter to Roosevelt urging him that the bomb be made (1933). Einsteins Biographer, Ronald Clark, stated how, even without Einsteins letters the bombs would've eventually been made. However, without his help the US would've have had built the bomb in time for their attack on Japan.

The battle of the Atlantic refers to the constant struggle in the ocean that took place throughout WW2 such as one of the first major naval engagements in May of 1941 when KMS Bismarck engaged HMS Hood resulting in the latter's magazine detonating and the ship sinking with all but about 100 hands. One of the more drawn out parts of the battle was the infamous submarine war between german submarines, their merchant targets, and the warships that served as their escorts. One such instance showed that the age of ship to ship warfare was reaching its end when the mighty german battleship KMS Tirpitz who had been holding up allied supply convoys by patrolling the waters off Norway was bombed till she sank by british Lancasters while she was in port.

The battle followed shortly after Iwo Jima and was predicted to be just as bad. The battle was proclaimed one of the bloodiest as more than 12,000 Americans, 100,000 Japanese, and 100,000 civilians died. The battle started with a massive preliminary bombardment followed by the largest amphibious landing conducted by the US in in effort to overwhelm the heavily fortified Japanese encampment.

In the Battle of Stalingrad Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad. This battle is known as one of the largest, longest, and bloodiest battles in modern warfare. From August 1942 through February 1943 more than two million troops fought in close quarters. This battle ultimately turned the tide of World War II in favor of the Allied forces. With a firm understanding of Hitler's plans, the Russians had already shipped much of the stores grain and cattle out of Stalingrad. The loss of Stalingrad was the first failure of the war to be acknowledged by Hitler which put him and the Axis powers on the defensive.

A Nazi is a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party. Nazis ruled Germany from 1933-1945 due to the reign of Hitler. Hitler joined the Nazi Party in 1921, the year it was founded, and became the leader. The party consisted of a small group of men including Anton Drexler and Karl Harrer. The Nazi Party promotes German nationalism, anti-Semitism, and the belief that the Treaty of Versailles was extremely unjust with the war reparations because Germany could never pay them back. Hitler became public speaker and started attracting new members and bashed Jews and installed this belief that Aryans were the "master race".

The Red Scare in the United States refers to the hysteria over Communists in the 1900's. It was at it's highest intensity during the 1950's, it started in the 1910's. This movement was lead by driving out citizens and political figures that agreed with the USSR and the Communist beliefs. Jobs were lost over communist allegations and during the Great Depression, it's beliefs grew stronger. US Senator Joseph McCarthy was the first figure to create the stigma and accuse government official of being communists. This is known as McCarthyism and is heavily associated with the reign of the Second Red Scare. People like McCarthy (most of the country) made vulgar political cartoons to scare away ignorant minds from Communism.

All of the men were enlisting in the war and all of the work force was leaving, there was no-one to work the assembly lines and the factories, because of this an army of women power burst through and the women started picking up the jobs that the men were leaving behind. This also provided many working opportunities for women. More than 6 million female workers helped to build planes, bombs and tanks and many other weapons. Women working and doing the jobs that were previously only for men, they created a new image for women in America, this also opened up new opportunities for them to learn. Rosie the Riveter fist was mentioned in a song written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb in 1942, "that frail little girl can do more than a man can do". A real life Rosie brought the character to life and her name was Rose Will Monroe, a Hollywood star named Walter Pidgeon was touring the plant when he bet Monroe. Because of his recommendation she starred as herself in a government film promoting the war. Rosie the Riveter stressed the patriotic need for women to enter the workforce.

Island hopping was a strategy in WWII to gain many small islands in the Pacific. This strategy allowed the United States to gain military bases also. Douglas MacArthur met with William Halsey on April 26, 1942, to lay out the plan. Their goal was to "corner" Japanese troops and to ultimately destroy their army. Island Hopping was very costly because it cost the United States thousands of men each time they attempted to take over an island.

This was a battle Germany wasn't ready for as when the war had begun contrary to his promises Hitler hadn't waited long enough for the navy to prepare and they only had about a third of the vessels they had planned to need under their "plan z" which was a naval re-armament doctrine. This was a drawn out game of hide and go seek for the german ships as they were horribly outnumbered and slowly hunted down. Though not all German ships were doomed to failure. One ship KMS Admiral Graf Spee, named after the admiral who had served in WW1, lead quite a successful career. She sank nine enemy merchant ships all while evading three separate british task forces that had been assigned to find and sink her. She traveled from Germany to south america then to the Indian Ocean and back again before finally being caught by a pair of british light cruisers and one heavy cruiser near Monte video in 1939. Following the engagement the ship was scuttled to avoid needless casualties and prevent german radars falling into the hands of the british.
