This is my still life photo of flowers in a soju bottle, shot on an iPhone 11. I shot this photo outside on the ground since I don’t have much external sunlight in my apartment so I chose to go outside to take the photo. I really enjoyed the texture of the wall i think it adds something to the photo. I wish i chose another bottle for the photo because i find the green and orange from the bottle clash too much with the white and purple from the wall and flowers. I think if i chose a better colour scheme it would have been nicer on the eyes. I liked the idea of leaning the bottle on the wall so the photo doesn’t look so generic of a bottle just standing there, but i wish i got a wider shot to get the full bottle and also avoid that shadow in the corner because i find it draws to eyes to something that wasn’t intentional placed.

This is a portrait photo taken of my friend Anne, shot on an iPhone 11. I chose this photo because i liked the snow mounds because I thought they made an interesting texture in the photo and the tress acted as a point to attract the eyes. I wish maybe i got a better shot of her, so maybe go closer to her to get a better of my model. I chose this photo of her taking off her mask because i liked the movement of the photo. I wish i got the movement in other ways maybe through hair or other ways to give more interest to the photo

SS: 1/500
F: 3.5
ISO: 3200

These photos were quite challenging to take. I found it hard to time it right where the coin would be in movement and have the photo in focus. For these photos, I took them using two lamps with tungsten bulbs, I chose to place the lights towards the wall and the ceiling to diffuse the light a bit so it wouldn't be as strong. For the 1/60 shutter speed photo, I chose to have a higher aperture and a low ISO. I did this to assure my photo wouldn't be overexposed. I think I would have chosen to clean up the surface because the water that is on the counter is a bit distracting since it picks up some of the light. For the 1/250 photo i chose a higher ISO and a lower aperture to compensate for the decrease in light. I found i could have added another light source to this photo because there are heavy shadows in the photo. The subject is still in focus and generally well lit but i would prefer to have the photo without a vignette around it. For the 1/500 photo i decreased the aperture and increased the ISO again to compensate for the loss of light. I find this photo could have really benefited if I had another light source to better light up the coin. Again, with both of the other photos I think it would have been better if the counter was cleaned to not distract from the main subject.

These photos were a bit hard to take since there was a shift in lighting throughout the process of taking these photos, I used natural sunlight, there was direct light and some overcast light. If I would retake these photos I would choose to maybe take these photos in a better lit area to keep the photos more consistent. I would also try to fix the grain in the final photo by adding more light into the photo or changing the ISO. I also find the chips in the wall are a bit distracting to the eyes.

If I can retake this photo I would have chosen a brighter spot to take the photo because the shadows are quite intense in this photo and the light was shifting from bright and direct sunlight to overcast, or I would have increased the ISO to 400- 650. I would also maybe place her face more in view with the improved light to have a better portrait of her face.

SS: 1/80
F: 5
ISO: 400

This is a still-life photo of a lemon meringue pie, it was inspired by this still-life painting of a cherry pie, painted by Heather Ihn Martin, I found the inspiration photo on Pinterest. What I would change about this photo would be to have better lighting in the photo, I took this when the light was overcastso the lighting isnt that strong. I also took the photo in the corner of my room so the shadows are quite intense in the background. I would up the ISO or go to a better lit area.

SS: 1/80
F: 8
ISO: 800

This is my urban landscape photo. I took this in St-Micheal metro, I was inspired by telephone booth photos and I took the opportunity to take this photo of an STM employee on the phone. I would definitely change the angle I took this in, I wish I got a better view of my subject and got a clearer shot of him. I would also have upped the ISO of this photo to maybe 1600 or 3200 since the lighting as it is in the metro is very low lit, because my photo is quite under exposed. I would have also maybe decreased my aperture more to have a better focus onto the booth and the light in view

SS: 1/60
F: 5.6
ISO: 3200
I shot this photo in my grandmother's kitchen. This photo was quite hard to take for quite a few reasons; first, I couldn't find a place that had a pendant light, so I had to settle for my grandmother's kitchen. My second issue was the lightning, in Weems's photo there are deep shadows but the main subject is still well lit. I had this big issue with lighting since my only light source was the pendant light. I got my grandmother and sister to model for this and I set up the scene myself, I used water glasses in place of a wine glass, and a pen and paper in place of a cigarette. I think the framing could have been done better to have the light better centred with the table and the subjects. I wish I could have chosen a scene closer to Weems's photo but I still enjoy my results.

SS: 1/200
F: 4
ISO: 200
I took this photo in my car with my friend Vy. I had to position her around to help recreate the model in Weems's photo which was harder than expected. It was hard to act as a director. I found it difficult to play around with the lighting of this photo. I wanted to recreate how Weems was able to highlight the subject's face in the image but simultaneously have the bottom half of the subject's body well exposed. I think my issue was the time of day, it seems that Weems took the photo most likely during golden hour or during a time when the sun wasn't as strong. I took my photos around 3 pm and the sun was very bright and white, there were no clouds to add filtering to the light so it was a great difficulty to get a shot that I felt emulated Weems's photo. I tried to drive around to different locations to get a better view of the sun but I think it would have been better if I chose to take this photo during golden hour or a bit before so that there is a softening of the sunlight and it wouldn't be as harsh on the subject.

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T3i
Lens: 18-55mm

The inspiration for this diptych was actually a TikTok where an artist was drawing different types of hugs and what emotions they carry. I was inspired by that video to create a Diptych that told the story of a hug between two friends. I wanted to create emotions of sadness and solemn through this diptych. I directed my friend Humaira (blue) to look sad, yet pensive, to give off that her character was uneasy about something. I directed my friend Jasmine (red) to look sad when taking the photo. I told them both to rest their heads on each other to show that this was a lingering hug that was held for a while. I wanted these two emotions to be conveyed through this diptych to show the emotions of a goodbye hug. How in a goodbye people will always have varying emotions and how they can be; sad, angry or even happy to say goodbye to something or someone. I chose the colours of this photo specifically to be red and blue since they are both very strong colours that a lot of people associate with anger and sadness. I dressed them in these bright colours to juxtapose the background, also by having the two very strong flat colours embracing each other looked nice and added more to the story I was trying to tell. Two people with different emotions in a goodbye, hugging one another to say their last words. I chose to take this photo near the N building around trees that still haven't bloomed to also add to the narrative I was trying to push, of a new start or a goodbye to another season. By placing these two photos side by side I am able to show the emotions of two people during a goodbye and their faces during it. I concentrated on their faces specifically because I found it funny how we never see someone's face while we are hugging them, especially when we are hugging for a long time.

In the Flower Bed

Camera: Canon Rebel t3i
Lens: 18-55mm

I chose to put these two photos because I was inspired by diptychs on Pinterest that concentrated on wide and close angle shots. I really loved these kinds of diptychs because I enjoy seeing the colours and textures between the two photos so I decided to do the same. The top photo is of a small flower bed I found when I was on a walk, the second photo was one of the flowers that i picked from that bed. I wanted to show the textures and beautiful colours of these flowers. My initial shot was purposely made to be a little blurred. I wanted to concentrate on the texture that the flower bed itself had, the second photo was supposed to be a single flower because I wanted to show the fine details of the beautiful flower that I wasn't able to capture in the first one. There isn't much of a story to this diptych. I just wanted to really shine light on the beauty and simplicity of nature. I find as a photographer i always try to fine beautiful and exciting and new shots of different people and different things. Sometimes i get so overwhelmed by that that I lose track of the beauty in simplicity. I made this diptych because I was in love with the simplicity of the flower and how something that was so small and on the ground was able to make such a beautiful diptych.

Camera: Canon Rebel T3i
Lens: 18-55mm

This is a diptych of someone's trash. I was on my walk and I saw someone toss out this bunch of old carpets. I was so fascinated by these because I loved the colour and the texture that they had. The shag carpet, the loose threats and the different warm colours. I saw it and just decided to snap the photos. I found it so interesting how I was so entranced by someone's trash. I made this diptych to tell my emotions. I loved the textures and colours of these carpets. Of course, the person did toss these carpets with a reason in mind but I found it so interesting how through the eyes of a photographer I saw beauty. There isn't really much of a story to tell with this diptych but I just wanted to really show the beautiful texture and colour of something so mundane and how the simplest of things can be seen as beautiful to one.

SS: 1/500
F: 3.5
ISO: 100

I chose a high shutter speed to aid with the lighting and exposure in the photo. I took this picture outside and it was a cloudy day so there was a lot of overcast light. Good because I didn't have to deal with harsh shadows but bad because I had to deal with backlighting, which always makes taking photos hard especially since I took this from a lower angle. I put my ISO at 100 because of the strong backlighting in the photo, which was quite difficult when I tried to take photos at higher than 100 ISO. Even though I kept my ISO at the lowest it can go my photos were still becoming overexposed due to the angle I took them at and the backlighting, so to compensate I changed my SS. I upped my SS to help darken the photo so my subject isn't overexposed. I chose a very low aperture so that I would have a shallow depth of field and the main focus would be on my subject's face rather than the background. I wanted to concentrate on the emotions of the photo so it made sense to put my settings to an aperture that would keep my subject's face as the main focus point. In full honesty I would have preferred to take this photo in a warmer light, like on a sunny day in the afternoon or during golden hour would have been nice too. I still really enjoyed the way the photo came out in the diptych after I edited it a bit and inversed the photo.

Since these photos were taken at the same time I kept my camera settings the same since it worked for my first photos of Jasmine (red). This photo was a bit easier to work with and I didn't have to edit it as much since the building behind my subjects aided with softening the back lighting. While editing the photo I didn't have to do much in comparison to my other having to deal with the lighting washing out my subject. Once again the high SS was to aid with the bright light and the already low ISO, the ISO was the lowest to avoid over exposure. A low aperture of 3.5 to once again keep the focus on my subject's face rather than to draw attention to the background.

SS: 1/320
F 5
ISO 200

I took this photo on a rainy day so the lighting was very overcast. I always find I have issues when the lighting is overcast because a lot of my photos become overexposed. I chose to keep my ISO at a low 200, to assure my photo wouldn't be overexposed but not underexposed. I chose to have a SS of 1/320 because I wanted to try and capture the raindrops falling and pooling on the leaves. I think if I wanted to really capture the rainfall my SS should have been higher but I was able to capture the rolling beads of water on some of the blades of grass. I put my aperture at F 5 because I wanted a shallow to a medium depth of field. I wanted to not have so much detail upfront to assure I can concentrate on the flower later on. By placing the aperture at F 5 I was able to concentrate on the middle of the flower bed creating a blurred effect in the foreground that I really enjoyed. Preferably I would have chosen to photograph taller flowers, I think if I photographed taller flowers I would be able to play more with the depth of field and shifting around my aperture and definitely would be able to capture the raindrops easier. I still appreciate how dainty these flowers are though and I did find these flowers on flook when I was just going on my walk.

I kept my SS and my ISO the same because the lighting didn't change and I still wanted to try and capture some rainfall. Unfortunately, during this time the rain started to subside to drizzles. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to capture the rain but I think if I upped my aperture and raised my SS I would have been able to capture what I wanted to. I lowered my aperture to F 4.5 because I wanted to really concentrate on the fine detail of the flower. I would have preferred to hold the flower by the flower bed to really work with the texture and colours of the flower bed. I really enjoyed how I was able to capture the fine details of the flower and how it looks single. Again the light was overcast from the rain but I would have preferred to keep to have a softer warm light to take this photo to oppose the cold nature of the first picture. I still enjoy how this ended out though.

The lighting was actually quite bright and I was getting overexposed photos so I decided to keep it at 200 ISO. I actually didn't specifically intend to have such a high shutter speed as 1/300 but it was just the SS my camera was at when I was last taking photos. I kept my aperture at 4.5 because I wanted to concentrate on the foreground of the photo, showing the loose threads, the frills of the carpet, etc... Really concentrating on the textures in the photo more than anything, so by keep my aperture low I was able to really hone in onto that.

I chose to change my aperture to F 5 to have more of a medium depth of field in the photo and concentrate more on the carpet rather than the texture and color of the spirals. I find I was semi successful doing so but I wish I lowered my ISO because this photo feels a bit too bright. I also would have changed the framing of the photo a bit more. I would have done it in portrait and get a different angle so that my photo would look more uniform. I found that this picture has too much going on with no uniformity and didn't complement my first photo as much as I think it could have. If I can retake this photo i would have increased the aperture and lower the ISO, i would have taken a side profile of the carpets in portrait to assure it aligns better with my first photo and looks more cohesive. I still enjoy how this photo turned out with the diptych but I would have preferred to change it up a bit.
