  • In regards to collaborating with faculty, always be attentive to their inquiries (especially Early Alerts); with respect to working with students, have an understanding that equity means meeting students where they are - some students may need more guidance than others, or a more concerted effort may be required in directing them towards appropriate resources to enhance their educational experience.

I look forward to becoming more informed about how to best assist students. Starting their first year can be a time of significant anxiety, and I believe that by helping them understand how EDUC 1300 can support them, I can alleviate some of those concerns and help them navigate the transition more smoothly.

My advice for fostering a collaborative relationship with faculty and working effectively with students includes practicing empathy, maintaining transparency, upholding professionalism, and being honest. These principles can help build trust and create a supportive environment for both students and colleagues.

I enjoy working with incoming students and helping them figure out their path.

My advice would be to create a space for yourself where you feel the best so that you can give your best. Being part of a great team makes a huge difference and it starts with you.

I think the best advice to effectively working with students is to be genuine in getting to know them and their interests. It can be difficult with large caseloads to know students individually, but that is what makes all the difference! When a professor or advisor remembered my name and details about our last interaction it made me feel more at home on campus as a student. It builds trust immediately and students are more open to guidance. Also be consistent in messaging to students. If they see you are reaching out to help, they are more likely to reach back when an issue arises.

My name is Danyell Oliver. I have about a year worth of experience in advising. I been away from advising for some years, and ready to get back into it. I look forward to learning as much as possible to be able to give my students as much support as possible to help them win. The best advice I can give is to be open to what your students would like to achieve. Even if it's tough on them. If they want it bad enough, do what you can to help them get there.

My name is Ruth Diaz and I have been an advisor for over two years. I look forward to working with students to bring to light their potential and to help them to accomplish their academic goals. My best advise is to ask for help when things get overwhelmed. Also to ask when in doubt and keep informed.

My name is Martin Crichlow. I have 20 years of experience as an advisor, working with students from diverse backgrounds and helping them navigate their academic and personal challenges. Over the years, I've developed a deep understanding of student needs and the best practices to support their success.

As an EDUC 1300 advisor, I look forward to guiding students through their foundational college experience. This course is often a student's first encounter with college-level expectations, and I am excited to help them build the skills, confidence, and mindset necessary for academic success and lifelong learning.

To foster a collaborative relationship with faculty, it’s essential to maintain open lines of communication and mutual respect. Regularly engaging with faculty members, asking questions about your progress and being proactive in addressing potential concerns can help create a strong partnership.

I believe it's important to remember that for most of our EDUC students, everything about college is new and maybe a little intimidating. Be sure to thoroughly explain and check for understanding. Let them know they can always come to you for any questions they may have.

My advice to work effectively with students is to create a relaxed, welcoming, friendly environment so that feel comfortable reaching out to you and sharing information. Students often come to advisors first, even if the help they need is offered by a different department. Develop contacts and relationships with other student services colleagues. Stay up to date on all resources available on your campus so that you can make effective referrals for student support.

To work effectively with FTIC students, one must never assume anything. An advisor needs to exercise actively listening and understand that many of the students do not even know what questions to ask. Working with the students often requires an extra helping of patience.

I have over 25 years of experience with Higher Education.

As an advisor, being able to support and guide students through this transformative journey is incredible fulfilling. It's exciting to think about the impact I can have on their academic and personal growth, and to see the confident, accomplished individual they will become.

My advice is to be a good listener. Listen to them about their plans and their needs, ask questions that will help them think things through and then guide as needed.

My advice for working with students is to let them know that you care. That sets a foundation for a great relationship of collaboration and their success. College can be a scary thing and it's always good to know that there is someone you can go to who is safe, honest, and has your interests at heart.

One thing I look forward to is helping students narrow down their pathways. College can be difficult to figure out so, being able to simplify what they are working towards and precisely get them where they need to be.

I'm Michelle, and this is my 5th year as an advisor. I've been with Lone Star College for 7 years across multiple departments in the Student Services division.

My most effective approach to building relationships with students is by being relatable and transparent. I've noticed that it helps them to know that even though I'm working my career now, I had my own set of challenges and setbacks while working and attending classes. I understand where they're coming from and their experiences are valid. Their first year in college is radically different from K-12 and they are experiencing a lot of change at a very sudden pace; sometimes they stumble or need extra support. Letting them know that we're here for them and that this entire course is designed to set them up with a support system helps them get a little bit more invested and feel comfortable asking questions.

I’m Joel Pearson, and for the past 17 years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding students toward their academic, personal, and professional triumphs. Currently, I serve as an academic advisor at Lone Star College - Montgomery, where I focus on empowering veterans and students in business and professional studies. My journey has been dedicated to not just supporting, but truly inspiring individuals to achieve their fullest potential.

As an advisor for EDUC 1300 I look forward to meeting my students and helping them to develop a path that will ensure that they are successful at achieving their goals.

When advising EDUC 1300 classes I look forward to opening the students’ minds to all the possibilities. Some come in knowing exactly what they want, others with ideas, and some with no idea at all. My favorite thing is watching the wheels start to turn or seeing the light bulb come on for them. It’s exciting to realize all the possibilities!

In general my approach to fostering relationships with faculty and students is to listen with curiosity rather than judgement. Be genuine, ask questions, engage! People know when you’re not being authentic. For students, I would say it’s especially important to help our non-traditional students see that they do belong, that they are wanted, that their perspectives and lived experiences are SO valuable and that they are capable!

One thing I look forward to is helping students understand their goals so they can better understand their own degree plan. My advice for working with students is to communicate early and often.

My name is Mayra and I have approximately 5 years of advising experience.

One of the many things I look forward as an EDUC advisor is building rapport with students. I enjoy seeing and advising students throughout the semester and EDUC facilitates a relationship since EDUC meetings can be lengthy and gives me the opportunity to get to know the student as an individual.

My advice for working with faculty is to layout clear expectations and communicate to create an effective advising experience for the student.
