I am Sarah Killingsworth and I have 9 years of academic advising experience. I look forward to discussing students' interests and helping them formulate career goals during the first semester. I think it's important to start college with an end goal in mind.

I think the best advice to effectively working with students is to be genuine in getting to know them and their interests. It can be difficult with large caseloads to know students individually, but that is what makes all the difference! When a professor or advisor remembered my name and details about our last interaction it made me feel more at home on campus as a student. It builds trust immediately and students are more open to guidance. Also be consistent in messaging to students. If they see you are reaching out to help, they are more likely to reach back when an issue arises.

I ten moved to Teaching the FYI class and advising for the FYI class; HUMD 0330 and then EDUC 1300. So much has changed over that time. My little helpful hint for new advisors assigned with EDUC 1300 is simple. You do not have to like the student, but it is important you love them. You might be the only one. College is a new and different learning environment. They all need you. So, demonstrate the love.

Ten of those years were at Lone Star College.

I look forward to meeting our EDUC 1300 students and supporting them in defining their academic, transfer and career goals.

My advice to work effectively with students is to create a relaxed, welcoming, friendly environment so that feel comfortable reaching out to you and sharing information. Students often come to advisors first, even if the help they need is offered by a different department. Develop contacts and relationships with other student services colleagues. Stay up to date on all resources available on your campus so that you can make effective referrals for student support.

I've been an academic advisor for a little over a year after previously working as a financial aid advisor. One thing I look forward to as an EDUC advisor is getting to see and meet students in all walks of life and giving them a positive welcome to their higher education journey. It's exciting to meet new students and see all of their potential for growth and academic success. My advice would be to be very open and available when meeting with students and to listen to what they are telling you. Many times we get caught up in the routine of advising, that it can become monotonous and repetitive in certain aspects. Knowing that every student has different interests, learning styles, communication styles, backgrounds, etc. is something to always keep in mind.

Hi everyone!

I'm Michelle, and this is my 5th year as an advisor. I've been with Lone Star College for 7 years across multiple departments in the Student Services division.

My most effective approach to building relationships with students is by being relatable and transparent. I've noticed that it helps them to know that even though I'm working my career now, I had my own set of challenges and setbacks while working and attending classes. I understand where they're coming from and their experiences are valid. Their first year in college is radically different from K-12 and they are experiencing a lot of change at a very sudden pace; sometimes they stumble or need extra support. Letting them know that we're here for them and that this entire course is designed to set them up with a support system helps them get a little bit more invested and feel comfortable asking questions.

EDUC 1300 is my favorite part of my job! I really enjoy meeting with our diverse student population and being part of their educational goals. I consider their EDUC 1300 meeting to be their first transfer advising meeting. This is very similar to what wa mentioned by Josette Nwagei of Tomball. When I can obtain the information prior to the meeting from the student, I have already looked into a career pathway and usually an online college (as that is usually the preference for our students) or at another college if they mention a transfer. This is in addition to the immediate planning for the next semester and reviewing any questions the student may have. I want to hear their thoughts, their roadblocks, and work with helping the student overcome these so they can be successful in their coursework and educational goals.

It’s exciting to realize all the possibilities!

In general my approach to fostering relationships with faculty and students is to listen with curiosity rather than judgement. Be genuine, ask questions, engage! People know when you’re not being authentic.

I've been with LSC-Online for over 10 years and in higher education for 20 years. I've worked in undergraduate and graduate admissions and doing transcript evaluations in the Registrar's Office at another institution. I worked closely with Advising. These experiences, especially transfer credit knowledge, help me assist students with their course selection to have a successful transfer after LSC. One thing I enjoy about EDUC advising and advising in general is that I get the privilege of assisting students on their pathway to furthering their educations. One piece of advise is that students often disclose personal information/struggles with us. We can all use our own college/life experiences, positive and negative, to further gain trust and make ourselves more relatable to students. Having a great working partnership with Faculty is also key. If we both tag team our reminders to students to sign up for advising, more students tend to sign up.

Hello, my name is Lana Walters and I have 15 years of experience as an academic advisor. I look forward to encouraging students on their pathway to reaching their academic and career goals. In my experience as an academic advisor, I have encountered students who could not see the importance of completing courses such as EDUC 1300. Thus the one thing I would suggest to new EDUC 1300 advisors is to work with students in a way the contributes to them finishing the semester with a greater appreciation for completing the course. An advisor may never know how something they said or sent by email may contribute to a student changing their perspective about their coursework.
