Thank you for getting this started Stacy! I have never done this before so hopefully I will be able to figure it out. I wanted to copy and paste Ellen's original idea. Is this something we want to do?

"I was thinking that perhaps we could go cross curricular with our lessons so that it is something everyone could use. Ex:
-Read The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind (a true story about a boy from Malawi who taught himself how to make a wind turbine to change wind power into electricity and to pump water from the ground) to introduce a real world problem.
-students research windmills/wind turbines
-make and share design plans using ipad apps
-build, test, and improve prototypes for windmill blades (spun by wind from a hairdryer) to raise pennies in a cup (to symbolize water weight)... I can come up with a design and material list for this using common household/school supplies"

This is prototype of what I was envisioning... there is water in the cup. I think the meat of the project would be in the engineering of the blades. Students would have choice of a few building materials and types of tape. They would independently then collaboratively decide upon a number, shape, and size of blades they think would work best. They would build and test their designs and go back through the engineering design process to build new blade designs based on their observations and data they collect.

I found this video on YouTube which is an episode dedicated to wind. It's 25 minutes long, but it could be a resource we would use with the students.
