I also expect the government to use the money the taxpayers pay is being used to the best of their ability. That the money goes to things the citizens need such as good school, better roadways, social security. I also expect that the government cares about its citizens and does what they can to make sure citizens have the ability to obtain all they may need through life (food, cloths, high school education ext). 
I am not very interested in politics. I usually do not keep up with politics unless it is during an election time, but I do know about what is happening in politics (example: if a new policy or law is passed that affects me, I make sure I read some article so I know how it affects me). It symbolizes the unity of the states, coming together for their independence. They pledge to stick together and have kept that played for several hundred years. I enjoy reading the Declaration of Independence better because somehow I understand it better.
