This is one page of a somewhat messy spread, but I liked this one for its use of color and headline/theme. The main images are used both as elements of design and ways to carry the theme presented by the headline. I think a large image to the side, like the mushrooms here, that the text wraps around could add something we usually don't see in our magazine.

This design is really interesting because it uses both the cutoff text wrap image on the side, and two other images on the other. The pull quote on top of the price tag is very clever and something I think we should replicate, especially for an Opinion story where we use a related symbol to layer the quote and add more visual appeal.

This spread is great! I love hopw the use of colors ties so closely to the theme of the show. The illustration is almost exactly like one scene in the show, which just adds layers to its greatness. The text also stops about mid-way to make space for the drawing beneath which is so cool!

This has a lot of overlapping photos, which I think lends a really nice effect to the page. The headline going under the photo on the first page is also a good idea for avoiding having two headlines right next to each other every page. Also, the necklaces going under the photos gives me some ideas for text wrap elements I can connect to photos and make the page look less like newspaper and more like an actual magazine.

I like this spread because the photos are the main focus. The story is there, but the photos are really what draws the reader’s eye. I saw that we were running a feature on the WMD musicians, so maybe if it's going in the magazine (because the date is so uncertain), we can do this with their photos. Features, in general, could benefit from this sort of spotlight with the photos.

This has to be one of the best spreads I’ve ever seen in a student publication. Admittedly, as a college, they have more freedom, but this theme of the brown bag and the almost scribbled-on student reviews next to the feature/review of the website is too good to not consider easing up on the design restrictions of our publication. This spread is just perfect and it's yet another great idea for Features.

This is a spread I can actually do! The headline is similar to what I used for my first spread, it’s a simple three-column text design with an artfully placed recycling bin that also serves to fill the space left by the story and the illustrated bottles in the corner make this more playful and vibrant. This is another superb design that I might have to steal.

I also like that the ventricles and the text were color matched to make it more cohesive. There is also use of the red color in text further down on the page and the next one over.

This is another great example of using a main color. The blue is carried from the top left corner of the first page to the farthest part if the second. That shade and a lightened version of it make up most design elements of the page, and while the varied colors of the headline are very different, they are complimentary. The bold text of the headline also serves as a subheadline on the second page. I know Gabrielle mentioned highlighting writers a bit more on the website in one of the Google Forms critiques, and I think this is exactly the way to do that. This looks very clean and professional and might give our website a more prestige look while showcasing our writers.

I love how this website displays student art on their front page. I think that if we had any editorial cartoons for stories, we could find a way to display them on the home page in their own spot and hyperlink the story, which may drive more readers to it. If any of the artists at the school were interested we could spotlight work, or add additional photos that don't necessarily have a category or place in stories.

I really like the way the text is all part of the design here instead of sort of in the way. Both the monitor screen and the notes having the text is so creative and I'd love to do something like that with a pull quote. I think that it would be an easy way of making the page more appealing and uniting the text with design elements that make it more cohesive. I also like the supplies on the bottom of the page because I'm interested in having a design that uses a drawing underneath the text instead of to the side like it always is.

I like this for two reasons. One, I love the placement of the little drawings right next to the headline. I think that having a little illustration that fits maybe a key word of the headline would be good to add a visual element on a different part of the page. I also like the grey spots on the left page. Throughout this issue, there are colorful dots and splotches behind the text and they add something without making the page busy. I like how it's clean but still fun.

I love how this headline uses the colors from the drawing on each individual line. I also really like boldness and size of the font, because it draws attention to itself and establishes it and the drawing as the main spectacle of the design. Though it's very simple in every other part, I think it's appropriate with the boldness of the image and headline. Using good, big images instead of trying to sprinkle elements throughout the page would make the pages feel more professional and focused.
