Holden thinks this when he is back at his hotel, feeling lousy and depressed. He is just about to get propositioned for a prostitute.

I find this quote interesting because it makes me wonder, does this mess really happen "all of a sudden"? It seems like Holden has been on downward spiral for most of this book. Allie's death, getting kicked out of four schools, feeling lonely and depressed, all of this had led him to this point where he makes a really bad decision.

“It’s ten bucks chief I tole ya that”(113).

Maurice yells to Holden through the door saying this even though he told Holden the price was 5 bucks. Holden payed the 5 dollars to sunny and now they asking for more money.

This quote is interesting because the characters in the book may actually not know what they said or heard before or they may be lying. I think they are lying and that Maurice is trying to scam Holden by telling him the price is lower and then making him pay more afterwards. This is a smart but illegal strategy for business.

He admits in this quote that he feels bad and that he wants to feel better but he’s going about it the wrong way. He has shown that he wants to be with his friends and is lonely but he keeps calling people like faith, sunny or the cab driver who he barley knows.

He had just paid for a her to come to his room.

This quote is interesting to me because it again brings up the theme of loneliness in Holden. Sunny is caught off guard by this because not many people randomly ask to just talk. This quote really portrays how Holden is alienating himself but really wants to get off his own little island by interacting with others.

He knows that this isn’t the type of person to actually make him feel like he has somebody to talk to and spend time with.

I think that this quote is interesting because it really shows his state of depression and loneliness. He feels that he needs somebody in his life he can establish a relationship with, but before he was thinking about this he just wanted to lose his virginity and “practice” for when he eventually gets married. However, he knows that this isn’t the way to do it, and it will not make him feel any less lonely and depressed than he already is. He needs a special person in his life he can talk to and bond with like Jane.

-
“The goddamn movies. They can ruin you.” (136)

Holden, the main protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye, has a distinctive dislike towards movies. This is shown throughout the story, but perhaps there is more to this puzzling discomfort than it seems. After being physically attacked, Holden lays still on the ground and daydreams about a more exciting and favorable scenario where he is similar to the main character of a movie. After this, he speaks about movies “ruining” people. Perhaps this is due to the certain perfection that movies show, which makes even the cynical Holden entranced. He believes movies are phony and clearly displays blatant disgust towards them, but from what is seen, this could be because despite thinking movies are fake, he wishes his life would be more similar to a movie. The main characters in movies have interesting and exciting lives, and to Holden, this perfection is just phony, unreal, and sickening. Furthermore, maybe also something he wishes for. Due to such wishes that contrast to his critical and judgmental nature, he despises movies, coldly stating that they “ruin“ people.

This was just after he was held against the wall and roughed up while they stole his wallet and grabbed the money.

I find this quote interesting because it is really showing how quickly Holdens life is going down. Holden started with a great life with a family of five and a good friend named Jane. Since then he has gotten kicked out of four boarding schools lost his friend Jane and more importantly his brother passed away to Leukemia. His life has even gone down since he left Pencey, and it’s only been a few days since he’s left. Holden has made many bad decisions and a horrible decision that he made tonight to trust Maurice but after all he is a 16 year old kid.

“I thought of giving old Jane a buzz, to see if she was home yet and all, but I wasn’t in the mood.” (Pg 117)
This takes place in the very beginning of the chapter when Holden wakes up.
I think this scean shows Holdens loneliness and longing for his past relationship with Jane. I think he says he wasn’t in the mood to cover up his own feeling of sadness and loneliness from himself because he Subconsciously knows he can’t take it.

“She hasn’t felt too healthy since my brother Allie died. She’s very nervous.” (130)

Holden is thinking about his mother, who has been affected by the death of one of her sons. We don’t meet her yet, but Holden is trying to describe his mother to readers and how Allie’s death has changed her.

I find this quote interesting because it is the complete opposite of how Holden handles Allie’s death. Holden’s mother is nervous and destroyed over the death of one of her sons, and we know this even when we haven’t met the character yet. Holden however, is more violent and angry compared to his mother, a prime example is punching out all the garage windows. One would think that since they are family, maybe they would think or act the same when experiencing the same trauma. However, the way Holden and his mother grieve or act after the death of Allie are completely different.

“The last time I’d eaten was those two hamburgers I had with brossard and Ackley when we went to Agerstown to the movies”

This quote is at the very beginning of chapter 15, when Holden has just woken up.

I find this quote interesting because when we saw Maslow hierarchy of needs, at the very bottom were things like food and shelter. Now that Holden finally got a good rest, his decision making is improving. Some examples are when he is talking to the nuns. He is feeling depressed, but he talks to them and donates money. I feel like Holden has started to finally get back on his feet and figure out life.

“Then a funny thing happened. When I got to the museum, all of a sudden I wouldn't have gone inside for a million bucks.”

After this quote, Holden states he would’ve gone if Phoebe, his younger sister, had. But since she didn’t, he wouldn’t go in. Perhaps this somehow relates to Holden’s loneliness or obsession with the purity that came from when he was a child.

“I was smoking a cigarette and when I stood up to say good-by to them, by mistake I blew some smoke in their face”(147).

This is when Holden is in the cafe talking to the two very nice teachers that were there with him. He was talking about Romeo and Juliet with them.

This quote shows that Holden really does care about people that are nice to him and people he can talk to. If Holden were to have done that to an ordinary person then he wouldn’t have apologized like that. But since it was people who really cared abiut him he felt really bad about it
