"Such was Catherine Morland at 10. at fifteen, appearances were mending; she began to curl her hair and long for balls; her complexion improved, her features were softened by plumpness and color, her eyes gained more animation, and her figure more consequence. Her love of dirt gave way to an inclination for finery, and she grew clean as she grew smart; she had now the pleasure of sometimes hearing her father and mother remark on her personal improvement" (Austen 2).

"She was looked at however, and with some admiration; for, in her own hearing, two gentlemen pronounced her to be a pretty girl. Such words had their due effect; she immediately thought the evening pleasanter than she found it before -- her humble vanity was contented-- she felt more obliged to the two young men for this simple praise than a true quality heroine would have been for fifteen sonnets in celebration of her charms, and went to her chair in good humour with every body, and perfectly satisfied with her share of public attention. (Austen 9)

"Mr. Tilney was polite enough to seem interested in what she said; and she kept him on the subject of muslin till the dancing recommenced. Catherine feared, as she listened to their discourse, that he indulged himself a little too much with the foibles of others.-- ""What are you thinking of so earnestly?"" said he, as they walked back to the ball-room;-- "not of your partner, I hope for, by that shake of the head, your mediation are not satisfactory" (Austen 13).

"Isabella recollected herself. "As to that my sweet Catherine, there cannot be a doubt, and you know me well enough to be sure that a much smaller income would satisfy me. It is not the want of more money that makes me just at present a little out of spirits; I hate money; and if our union could take place now upon only fifty pounds a year, I should not have a wish unsatisfied. ah! my Catherine, you have found me out. There's the sting. The long, long, endless two years and half that are to pass before your brother can hold the living." (Austen 93).

The importance of this quote is to show the reader that They are now beginning to talk in third person and not just first person. This is important as they are now seeing a different point of view. This also shows how the character is beginning to go through many different types of changes throughout the book and they may be good or bad. Many people hadn't noticed Catherine at first and they are now beginning to notice her and see her. Finally the author is using similes in his writing.

After they had been complimenting her it had made her night and made everything better. There had been 15 sonnets to help celebrate everything. She had been okay with the amount of attention that she had been getting.
