Iron Man is independent, innovative, and intelligent. He built his many suits of armor by himself without any help from anyone else. Iron Man is self-reliant in that he protects himself with his own inventions. Iron Man follows Emerson's idea that "imitation is suicide" as he creates his own super hero with his bare hands.

Free Bird

The song "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd resembles Emerson's "Self-Reliance" as it is the story of a man who is leaving a girl for his own personal gain, and she cannot stop him. The band eventually sings, ""Cause I'm as free as a bird now, and this bird you cannot change," suggesting that the man is independent from the woman and free to follow his own dreams. This shadows Emerson's belief that "nothing can bring you peace but yourself" as the man in the song is following his own path to find happiness.

Emerson describes many great people at the end of his essay who were misunderstood during their lives but created very important ideas for the later centuries. Vincent Van Gogh is another great person who was misunderstood in his lifetime. He suffered from mental illness, was put in asylums, was poor, only sold one painting during his lifetime, and eventually committed suicide. However, looking back at his artwork, people realized how innovative his artwork really was: he exploited unique brush strokes that no one has been able to recreate.
