. Who should a vehicle be programed to save first between two variables?

For my position, I'm trying to think as objectively as possible, and I've concluded that human lives are to be saved first and if there is a choice between saving a child and another person of older age, save the child. One thing that I believe should not play into the car's decision is apparent economic status. I don't think a successful person should be valued over a homeless person of the same age. Two things I'm struggling with, though, are: when should a person outside of the car be valued over the person inside the car, and who to choose between an older person and a mid-age person.

1. this article examines the results from a survey taken by 130 countries on the topic of whether self-driving cars are a viable option when looking at the issue of who to save in the case of an accident. The results found that depending on the country, the answers varied. As well, though many situations can be thought of, the possibilities of an accident are endless and a computer would not be able to account for all these possibilities.
2. one ethical issue is that self-driving cars take the liability away from the driver.
Another ethical issue is that the machine would have to decide on valuing one life over another.

This article is about the ethical dilemmas drivers may face when driving -- such as hitting a pedestrian and saving themselves, or vice versa -- and applying those ethics, decisions, and thought processes towards self-driving cars and their possible impacts. The article goes onto describe how values vary throughout different countries based on culture or economic status.

One ethical issue is that, based on the data taken from other regions, not each and every country agreed on the same decisions when faced with difficult scenarios.

A secondary ethical issue is if all humans surveyed cannot make a concrete decision on what the ethical decision is, how can a machine?

My position is that there is not enough evidence to support vehicle automation. It is inevitable that we will move towards fully automated machines, and while machine automation is beneficial in some ways to the future of humanity, a human should always be able to control the car in any situation if they find that their personal values overrides the machine's programming.

My stance- I just don't think there should be self-driving cars. I agree to Trains like they do in Europe because they are not in direct pathways to pedestrian crossings. Choosing between old/young, gender, status is ridiculous. Human is Human and should be chosen above all... in my opinion.
