Knowledge can sometimes give you more power over people of power. This is exemplified during the first scene where the Sailors have more knowledge of how to behave in the storm than the nobles, with one even saying that he has "great comfort from this fellow. Methinks/he hath no drowning mark upon him" (Shakespeare, 1.1.29-31). Because of the Boatswain's skills and knowledge, one of the nobles could find comfort in the terrible storm.

Just because you have status, doesn't mean you have control over people. A good example of this in The Tempest is in Act 1, scene 1, where you have high status royals and low status sailors. Some of the royals/nobles want to the sailors to get them out of the storm faster, but the sailors are already doing that as fast as they can. The royals/nobles continue to demand to get out of the storm faster and the boatswain had enough and told them to either help or get to the cabins.

People who are desperate or have a flawed perspective can be easily manipulated.

Evidence: "STEPHANO: Kiss the book. I will/ furnish it anon with new contents...

CALIBAN: I’ll show thee every fertile inch o’ th’ island,/and I will kiss thy foot. I prithee, be my god" (Shakespeare III.ii.148-149,154-155).

Evidence: Trinculo states that Caliban is "A very weak monster. The/man i’ th’ moon? A most poor, credulous monster!/—Well drawn, monster, in good sooth!"

Act 3: Perspective Theme

Thesis: When people are taught only one perspective, they usually base their thoughts and actions off of it.

Evidence: "Why, as I told thee, ’tis a custom with him/I’ th’ afternoon to sleep. There thou mayst brain him,/ Having first seized his books, or with a log/Batter his skull, or paunch him with a stake,/Or cut his weasand with thy knife" (Shakespeare III.ii.96-100)

Reasoning: Caliban offers several ways to kill Prospero as he has known nothing but beatings ever since Prospero made him his servant.

Evidence: "He has brave utensils—for so he calls them—/Which, when he has a house, he’ll deck withal./And that most deeply to consider is/The beauty of his daughter. He himself/Calls her a nonpareil" (Shakespeare III.ii.105-109).

Reasoning: Caliban offers a second way to hurt Prospero, taking everything he has. The reason why Caliban offers such a thing is because Prospero took everything from him: His mother, his happiness, and his freedom.
