Henry Heimlich: (1943-2016)

Henry Heimlich is best known for discovering the Heimlich Maneuver. This is a technique of abdominal thrusts to stop choking, first described in 1974. Before this, he also invented the chest drainage flutter valve (Heimlich Valve) in 1962, which allows air and liquid to drain from the chest cavity to allow a collapsed lung to reexpand. Henry Heimlich received many awards for his work including the Lasker Award in 1984, being inducted into the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame in 1985, the Golden Plate Award of Academy and Achievement in 1985, and being inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame in 1993.

Marge Schott (1968-1999)

Marge Schott became the first woman to buy an MLB team when she bought the Cincinnati Reds in 1984. While she owned the team, the Reds moved up to second place in the league for three years in a row: 1986-1988. Fans loved Marge because she kept the prices of tickets and concessions low. She sold the Reds for 67 million dollars in 1999, leaving her impact on the team.

Steven Spielberg (1959-Present)

Steven Spielberg is an award-winning director from Cincinnati. He started directing in 1959 and directed some of the best movies of all time, including Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Indiana Jones, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, and Saving Private Ryan. He is still working today, with West Side Story and Ready Player One as a few of his more recent films. Over the course of his career, he has won 155 awards, including 9 Golden Globes, and has been nominated for over 300 awards, making him one of the greatest film directors of all time.

Carson Foster (2007-Present)

Carson Foster swims for the Mason Manta Rays, and he has won 3 gold medals at the 2019 World Junior Championships and 2 silver medals at the 2017 World Junior Championships. He has been swimming since the age of 6 and broke the National Age Group record in the 50m Butterfly at age 10. Today, he swims for the Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas, and he made it to the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Trials, but he didn’t make Team USA until 2024. At the Paris Olympics, he won silver in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay, 4th in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley, and bronze in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley.

Keith Matthew Maupin (Matt Maupin) (2002-2004)

Keith Matthew Maupin, or Matt Maupin as he was known, served in the United States Army from 2002 to his capture during the Good Friday Ambush of 2004. Matt was the first U.S. soldier to be declared Missing In Action during the Iraq War. His remains weren’t found until 4 long years later, but no one knows exactly when he was executed. To honor him, Interstate 275 in Clermont County, his native county, was officially renamed the Staff Sergeant Matt Maupin Memorial Freeway after his confirmed death in 2008.
