Najah

What struck me from the article was that she moved to Singapore at such a young age and was so scared of what her classmates and parents might think of her if she spoke in either accent, and brands that she advertises insisted on using her Singlish accent, as if it will bring in more people. The reason why these caught my attention is because she struggled with how people then viewed 'ang mohs' or international students, and brands were taking advantage of the fact that she's a little different from the crowd. My question is that did she struggle with bullies back then, or did her classmates adapt to her?

Rayyan

The two points from the article that struck me as a reader is the fact she can change her accents from British to American To Singlish. Her capability to change her accents is surprising as that is like 3 accents and she was originally from Britain which was quite surprising. Another point is that even though she is originally from Britain, she treats Singapore as her home.

Her capability to change her accent into 3 accents surprise me as most people could maybe have around 1 accent, that is what caught my attention. Like, she was in Britain for 5 years before moving to Singapore at the age of 5 and entering an international school before changing to a Singapore Primary School. So, she used a British Accent for 5 years since she was in Britain, used an American Accent for 4 years since she entered an international school at the aged of 5 till 9 (Primary 3) and used Singlish accent after entering a Singapore normal school. Which means, under a short period of time, she managed to developed 3 accents. Myself, could not even do it since I normally use a Singlish accent which counts as 1 accent. I thought she would consider Britain as her home since she was born and stayed there till she was 5.

I would like to know how she managed to developed 3 accents over in a quite short period of time as it is impressive?

Zheng an

Two points that particularly resonated with me from the article are that she possesses three distinct accents and that, despite her British origins, she has come to know more about Singapore than her home country.

The fact that she can speak with three different accents caught my attention because it's quite rare for someone to master multiple accents. Typically, people tend to have just one accent based on their upbringing. I found it intriguing that, despite having lived in Britain, she has developed a deeper understanding of Singapore due to her longer residence here. This highlights how our environments can shape our identities and perspectives.

If I had the opportunity to explore further, I would like to know how long it took her to find an accent that she felt best suited her. It must have been challenging to navigate between different accents, and I wonder how she ultimately decided which one to embrace as her own

Plus, she learned it in a short period of time in a young age. That was what caught my attention as i wouldn’t be able to learn 3 accents in a short period of time. When she said she accept Singapore as her home, it caught my attention as she was originally from Britain. However, she came to Singapore at five years old and started learning more about Singapore and the accent. She also absorb stuff quickly, so her Singlish and Singaporean accent developed here. She also felt comfortable as a Singaporean as she said “Even when i visit the UK, i don’t know the slang or the roads” This shows that she feels more comfortable and feel like a true, blue Singaporean even if she doesn’t have a citizenship yet, so she feels like home here.

• How is she able to develop her code switching ability?

1) The part where she said that she wouldn't talk in her American or Singlish accent at home because she didn't want her parent to think that she was embarrassed about her British accent. That part struck me because it was probably confusing for a kid or teen to have to switch from accent to accent around people and considering this is Singapore she probably talks in Singlish more, So its impressive how she does not forget how to switch to her other accents or not feel like its redundant to remember them.

2) The other part would be that she didn't stick to international schools which would typically be expected of people who aren't Singaporeans, If that was my child I would be hesitant to put them in a local school as it would confused them, but since her parents started when she was younger it would've probably been easier for her to adapt to the local school system and having to actually talk to the locals

3) I would probably ask about the experience of how it was in the local schools while being a Caucasian or "ang moh" as it is probably intimating for some

Switching between accents are tough and sometimes the can be an accent slip.

It caught my attention because if I ever saw an Ang Moh speaking Singlish, I would think that the impression would be bad but the says that the accent sounds like a singaporean and that is really shocking thing to hear. Maybe they are trying to learn the slang to colonies us again?

Why do we see Westerners as special? As a Singaporean, I speak on the half of Singapore that when we see an Ang Moh, we tend to stare and look at them like they entered our habitat. And I feel that seeing them makes us think of them that they are super cool when they are just regular humans. I think that if we were to see an Indian learn a Chinese accent we would be shock but not like super shocked.

qaisarah

article 1:

No, i don’t know someone who was offered a vape by their friends but i do know people who vape or smoke cigarettes. From what i know, its a way to relieve stress for some people or some decided to try and eventually got addicted which made it hard for them to quit.

Yes, Alxkee should send the message as being a good friend means to tell them whats right and not do illegal stuff. It shows how he cares and worries about his friends as it could affect their life as it is harmful to their body. If he sends the message, his friend would probably reconsider his decision and alxkee would be saving someone’s life which makes him a good friend and also a good person. Its all about humanity

article 2: i learnt that everyone has struggles that they don’t talk about and find it hard to seek help, and everyone had a point in life where they were at their lowest and thought it was the end. I learnt that we should always check up on those who seem off as sometimes its hard for them to seek help. Us people can play our part in checking up on our friend as we dont know what they’re going through and it can make their day a little better. A small act can make someone’s day better.
