Van Gogh was born in Zundert, the Netherlands, on March 30, 1853. As a child he started drawing. Van Gogh's father pressed him a lot because he wanted him to have another life but Van Gogh remained in his idea. Van Gogh is one of the most important painters in history. He did so many paintings but he succeeded in selling only 1. Van Gogh began painting at the age of 27 but the most famous works are those before his death. Van Gogh died on July 29, 1890.

This is the most important painting of the Dutch period by Van Gogh, before his move to Paris. Vincent worked on this canvas from April 13th until the beginning of May 1885, a period in which the painter had almost completed the work except for some changes made later but always in the same year with a small brush. Van Gogh's personality begins to emerge with the 'clandestine works' of the Dutch period, when he began to engage in dozens of studies on some particular themes, such as potato eaters, his first masterpiece.
