Ciarán Hinds

He appears strong and powerful. Ciarán Hinds has an impressive personality and can influence and even intimidate through sheer force. He possesses a natural authority. These were all characteristics of Danforth, as well a similar serious and conceded personality.

Danforth's Motives

Danforth made it seem as if he wanted to get to the bottom of witch craft and expel it from Salem, but in all reality, he had secret motives of his own. He was only concerned with making his name know as the man who put an end to the witch craft in Salem. He is motivated to put his name down in the history books, not solve the problem that is witch craft. He is a very serious and mysterious character in this play.

Danforth is known for being stern and upfront with other characters throughout "The Crucible". He puts himself above others, and uses his position of power to do so. By asking other characters "do you know who I am?", Danforth shows how superior he feels he truly is (3). He continuously expresses this behavior as a means of controlling others and using his status for his own personal benefit.

Danforth seems to make an effort to ensure that all other citizens of Salem know who he is and what he can do to them. Although, in some instances, Danforth can show some compassion towards people. His sense of "great relief and gratitude" when John Proctor decides to confess, shows how he is able to show sympathy to others (4). This may seem surprising due to his otherwise hostile nature

Danforth is known to be a gravely old man. When he is first introduced "on his appearance, silence falls"(3). This exemplifies how his stature affects others inside the courthouse. Before he even speaks, Danforth makes an impression on the other characters, which was most likely his intention.

Reverend Parris embodies this fear that looms over Salem and its people. When he "[would] like to question" Danforth, he speaks with uncertainty laced in his voice (3).
