Joint Sibuyan Island Visit 2^nd quarter (April, May, June) 2024

· Site selection and Ground truthing for ALWAN survey sites – Potential sites in Sibuyan Island will be selected by Dr. Licuanan using remote sensed data. A combined team of Sisid Sibuyanon partners and collaborators (LGU representatives, Bantay Dagat, DENR-PENRO, UP Visayas, RSU,etc) will visit each site for ground truthing to determine fitness with ALWAN criteria. One site per municipality for a total of 3 sites for Sibuyan Island.

· ALWAN survey for selected sites - After sites have been verified, a marine assessment using ALWAN will be carried out by Sisid Sibuyanon partners and collaborators. Each municipality will host / support the surveys, ideally carried out before onset of the Monsoon season.

I think regular presence on Sibuyan by those from ouside the island is crucial for support of local initiatives, ideally every 2-3 months (as has been done in Sisid Sibuyanon so far. _nina ingle

Collaborate with Blue Nomads to create a 3D bathymetric map of Sibuyan Island including its coastline using secondary data (GEBCO geo data and NASA Earth). Mr. Diego Arechaga of BlueNomads.Org has expressed interest to improve the regional 3D map they posted on their website last Feb. 24, 2024 and provide a more zoomed in bathymetric map of Sibuyan Island. The maps can be used for conservation and management by LGUs, gov’t. agencies and stakeholders and has the potential to generate public interest and appreciation.

From RSU, we commit to conduct the impact evaluation of the Sisid Sibuyanon Project in the next year. Also, we will continue our conservation effort on Sibuyan Island.

Need clearer definition of the primary objectives/reasons for applying the Alwan methods - Is it change detection? The evaluation of the effectiveness of current MPAs? Improved public awareness of

the status of reefs?

I suggest to create a theme in each commitments or answers of the participants so that we can identify what problems or events that needs to address in sibuyan. With this we can easily create solutions based on what we have and what the other stakeholders can share.
continous monitoring using alwan method, comparing data so we can identify the differences and what needs to be improved.
Introducing other citizen science method to target other ecosystem to maintain the biodiversity of the island.

For AFI-BK, since we have tentatively scheduled a Reef survey and report in Romblon on May 2024 an additional data's will be endorsed to the LGU. We can also further coordinate for other activity/concern that we can incorporate during the facilitation.

Sustainability concerns: 1) How can we keep the trained citizens engaged so that skills and knowledge gained are not lost? 2) Ideally, surveys continue even in the absence of external assistance -- how to enable this? 3) How can the knowledge generated by the surveys be disseminated to more locals?

We are dedicated to consistently supporting the initiatives of Sisid Sibuyanon in safeguarding and conserving coastal resources in Sibuyan Island.

We kindly request that you consider inviting additional personnel from our office to undergo training in freediving and the ALWAN method of survey. This training will enhance their skills and knowledge, enabling them to actively participate in monitoring and surveying activities related to marine conservation.

Additionally, the PENRO Romblon office has set a goal to provide technical assistance to Local Government Units (LGUs) regarding coastal and marine matters during the second quarter (Work and Financial Plan FY 2024). We have received a request for assistance (coral assessment) from LGU Cajidiocan and are eager to collaborate with the team to fulfill this request.
