For one the Shelby's both the Mr and Mrs will be affected because they would lose two slaves. Mr. Haley would be affected because he would gain two slaves.

If Mr. Shelby goes through with the sale, there are 4 main people who would be affected. First off Harry would be affected because he is getting torn away from his mother and probably the best slave owner he will have, it will also affect Eliza and Mrs. Shelby because Eliza is very attached to her son, reasonably, and so is Mrs. Shelby because she sees Harry as her own child from when she lost a few of her own. And lastly it will affect Mr. Shelby because he will lose 2 slaves and also a sense of morality for tearing a small child away from his mother.

Everyone knows that slavery is bad, but the setting of a 'nice' plantation makes you think about the extremes of slavery. This kind of creates a solid setting for our characters to stand out compared to others. Her point is that rarely are slaves treated like this, and she could potentially be setting us up with a nice scene before a certain conflict would come up.

The author set the story in a "nice" plantation in Kentucky because she wanted to show that the slaves there weren't being treated horribly. The slave owners, specifically Mrs. Shelby, don't even believe slavery is moral. However, instead of setting the slaves free, she just tries to treat them so well that they won't want to be free. This is probably because it is still nice to have free labor, and having slaves is how plantation owners kept their business alive. Therefore, they call it a nice plantation to show that the slaves are treated better than in other locations.

If Mr.Shelby goes through with the sale of his slaves the people affected would be Eliza,Harry,Mrs. Shelby and Mr. Shelby. The reason Eliza would be affected is because she would be a part of the trade and would most likely go to a much worse plantation, leading to her treatment and quality of life dropping dramatically. The situation is the same for Harry because he would most likely end up in a very similar situation making his life miserable. The reason this would affect Mr.Shelby is because he would have to deal with the weight and the guilt of knowing that he sent these slaves to a much worse life and a terrible situation. Mrs.Shelby would be affected by some very important people in her life being torn from her.

Harry and Tom will be affected very directly as they change owners; their lives will likely be very unpleasant in the deep south. Eliza and Aunt Chloe will also be greatly affected by the loss of their loved ones. The Shelbys will be affected since they lost two slaves and Mr. Haley will by affected by the inverse.

It will affect Tom's family which is Aunt Chloe and their children. Eliza will be affected which will therefore affect Mr and Mrs Shelby. Mr and Mrs Shelby will also be affected not only due to Eliza's sorrow but because Mrs Shelby will be angry with Mr Shelby for the sale which goes against everything she has taught the slaves. It will likely affect most of the slaves on the plantation as they have bonded to each other and built their lives. Mr Shelby will be affected because he sold his most trustworthy and best slave he owns. Lastly it will affect Mr Haley because he will gain two slaves.

It sticks out to me that Mrs Shelby is against the selling of slaves because it goes against what she has taught them. She doesn't really seem to care that they are slaves rather she cares about how it makes her appear and what she has done to "save" them. She also cares about the fact that Mr Haley is a worse slave owner than her. I think this really shows the paternalism in slavery and how that is justification for it.

Eliza decides to take her son and run away, hopefully to Canada. She decides to do this because she cannot bear her son being taken and sold to a man who will not treat him kindly. Tom decides to stay after Eliza tells him that Harry and him are being sold. She says it is them or everyone will be sold. He decides to stay because he would rather him to be sold than everyone being sold. He also says he has been a trustworthy man and never went against his word and he won't do it even now. I understand Eliza because she is a mother and cares very deeply for her son. I understand Tom's thinking and I think he is being very selfless and it is very honorable for him to keep his "duty" as a slave and to also think about others even when his life could change so much.

It sticks out to me that when they talk about morality Mrs. Shelby brings up the fact that she has always been against slavery in a way but she thought she could provide a better life for them than freedom. But now that they are selling them to someone who is cruel it is wrong, and she even mentions that she would have done different things to earn the money rather than selling slaves. Mr. Shelby then discounts this and it shows that there is disconnection in their relationship.

The story displays the pain and daily suffering the slaves have to go through as this is a society they have to deal with.

I think in this book, the idea of slavery itself hurts Eliza and Tom. Even "good" slave owners still end up hurting Tom and Eliza due to their beliefs about slaves and slavery. Mr. Shelby hurts both of them by selling them, meaning that they were both going to be separated from their families. Mr Haley has hurt both of them because he is an awful salve owner. Eliza is being hunted by slave trackers. This causes the slaves to be incredibly mistreated, and even the ones who seem good are still inherently bad. A lot of the slave owners felt justified because they saw slaves as less than them and essential farm tools, or animals. That they need to care for or parent them. Despite them being very real people with real feelings, a lot of the slave owners still don't give them their freedom.
