They refused to let anyone get in the way of achieving their dreams just because they are colored. For example, in A Raisin In The Sun, the family moved into a house in an all white neighborhood. They chose this house because Mama said it was the only one they could afford. While making the down payment, Mr. Lindner (a member of the neighborhood) tries to tell them they should not live there because they do not fit in. The Youngers ignore his opinion and moved in anyway.
 In the movie, Fences, Cory had to fight for his career. Everyone always told him that he would never get a good job because of the color of his skin. He refused to give up on being successful however and decided to just go for it. He ignored what anyone had to say to try to bring down his confidence.
      Unlike A Raisin In The Sun, where the family had to fight together against the world, Cory had to fight the battle by himself. Even his own dad was trying to bring him down saying that he will never be able to do it. His dad, Troy, even tried telling him that the farthest he would possibly get is a garbage man or a woodworker. His dad was the one who prevented him from getting into college for football. Troy did not want Cory to spend his life on the sidelines of the field because "they don't let colored men play."
