Using the satellite view tool I zoomed in as close as possible to the terrain of the Island, moving left to right, top to bottom. These images were then printed off and stitched together in a grid pattern. I initially printed the map a couple of years ago to explore notions of boundaries and borders, ruins and abandoned buildings, and to familiarise myself with this island where I currently live. Now, as I reexamine it I am struck by how intrusive it is and I am reminded of Glissant’s talks of a “right to opacity” on the island of Martinique. 
 
I employed this map as a template to superimpose my own disorientated mind cartographies: using the language of mapping to explore connections within the island, organisations and themes which might form the basis of an expanded eco-art project within the local environment and community. More layers will be added as time goes on, in a deep mapping process which will simultaneously clarify and obscure.
