The unit was designed to be primarily student-centered, including cooperative learning, concept attainment and inquiry. My goal was to continue the transition from predominantly traditional teaching methods to active learning and student engagement. ‘Every child has the ability to learn’ was an important consideration and emphasis was placed on incorporating differentiated instruction. I am pleased with the unit I have developed. Being prepared allows me to be more effective whilst teaching and to focus on student needs. The topic was chosen because it sets a necessary foundation for many subsequent topics in Chemistry. Nearpod was used to make the session highly interactive because this group of students are a bit shy and need to be encouraged to participate in class.
