Planning for a Collaborative Learning Environment
In The Dreamkeepers, Ladson-Billings explains that "teachers with culturally relevant practices encourage a community of learners" (2009, p.74). One way to encourage a community of learners is creating a collaborative learning environment. Collaborative learning encourages students to work together to enhance learning. This video explains collaborative learning, and how to create an effective collaborative learning environment.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
In chapter three of The Dreamkeepers, Landson-Billings lays out the basics of culturally relevant teaching. This video reinforces and expands on the ideas that Ladson-Billings brings up. Culture and race are not the same thing, and it is important for teachers not to ignore the differences in race and culture. "If teachers pretend not to see students' racial and ethnic differences, they really do not see the students at all and are limited in their ability to meet their educational needs" (Ladson-Billings, 2009, p.37).

All Students Can
In The Dreamkeepers, Ladson- Billings states that "teachers with culturally relevant practices believe that all students can succeed" (2009, p. 48). This belief that all students are successful at something is extremely important. Discovering ways to assess students in a variety of ways, including projects, is a good way to be sure that you will find something that your students can be successful at. This video represents a culturally relevant way of thinking.

Giving Back to the Community
In The Dreamkeepers, Ladson- Billings says that "teachers with culturally relevant practices see themselves as part of the community, see teaching as giving back to the community, and encourage their students to do the same" (2009, p. 41). This video reveals a third grade teacher who saw herself as a part of the community, and gave back to that community in a huge way. When she won $150,000, she donated every penny to the school that she taught at.

Teaching as an Art
In The Dreamkeepers, Ladson-Billings declares that "teachers with culturally relevant practices see teaching as an art and themselves as artists" (2009, p.45). Teaching is a very creative profession. It is said that a teacher must put in 100% to get 10% back from his/her students. This video describes this concept of teaching as an art.
