Con tal propósito apunta a dos objetivos, los que definen las dos partes del libro. El primero, exponer cómo la vida intelectual y política estaba entonces fundada principalmente en el derecho natural, el que transmitido a través de su enseñanza y de la del derecho canónico condicionaba también la conducta social.

El otro de esos objetivos, al que está dedicada la segunda parte, es el de explicar cómo la comprensión de esta realidad pone en cuestión los usuales patrones periodizadores que hemos utilizado para dar cuenta de lo ocurrido en aquellos tiempos, en particular los de “tradición” y “modernidad”.
