Okonkwo expressed his temper issues prominently in this chapter. In the beginning he was contradicted by a man with no title at a meeting, he then proceeded to imply he was a woman. Towards the end of the book, during peace week his youngest wife went out to go plait her hair, when dinner was not ready at its expected time, he went to check on the food. To his surprise she was not in her home nor was the fire on. He then waited until she arrived at home and beat her, breaking peace week. He was then punished for his behavior by ezeani.

The Feast of the New Yam had approached which was an occasion for giving thanks to Ani, the earth goddess. Held every year on the first day of the festival people had to throw out the old yams as the new year must start with fresh new tasty yams. There was always so much food that no matter how many people were there or how heavily the family ate there would always be food left over. There was so much food that been cooked that if people sat on opposite sides they wouldn’t be able to see each other until the end of the meal as the food would block there sight of each other. As Okonkwo was a man with a strong arm he was supposed to invite lots of people which he asked his wives to do. Although, Okonkwo was uncomfortable sitting around waiting for a feast and was never enthusiastic about the feast. Okonkwo became angry about the fact that someone “killed the banana tree” even though it was alive. His second wife admittied to cutting off a few branches to wrap some food and so Okonkwo beat her fiercely. When he was done with that he went to go hunting with a rusty old gun which he had not killed even a rat with. The wife that had just been beaten murmured about the gun not being able to be shot which angered Okonkwo and made him shoot at that wife but she was unharmed. The second day was the wrestling day of the festival which is the day Okonkwo won the second wives (the wife that got shot at) love because of her love for wrestling. When Okonkwo was poor he couldn’t marry her but 5 years later Ekwefi the second wife and heartthrob of the village at the time ran away to be with Okonkwo, big mistake. The drums for the wrestling match began at noon but the wrestler wait till the sunsets. Obiageli, Nwoye’s sister came home cry because she lost her pot and Ikemefuna stood up for her when Nwoye’s brothers tried to tell the truth about how she lost her pot.
