Mr. Brindi wants his students to develop a deeper understanding of multiplication strategies. He assigns a math journal prompt: “Explain two different strategies you could use to solve 7 x 8. Which one do you prefer and why?” After students write their responses, they swap journals with a partner and use a success criteria checklist to give feedback. Some students identify that their explanations are missing details, so their revise their work before submitting.

At the end of the lesson, Mr. Brindi asks students to complete a self-reflection:

“What strategy do you feel most confident using? Why?”

“What is one thing you want to improve in multiplication?”

Discussion Questions:

How does this activity help students take ownership of their learning?

What role does peer feedback play in assessment of learning?

How can Mr. Brindi support students who struggle with self-reflection?

After a unit on 3D shapes and surface area, Ms. Franco assigns a performance task: Students must design a mini park using 3D shapes. They calculate the surface area of different features (eg. bench, pavilion) and explain their reasoning. Students submit a labeled blueprint along with their calculations. Ms. Franco uses a rubric to assess mathematical accuracy, problem solving strategies, and communication of ideas.

Discussion Questions:

How does this assessment of learning measure student understanding?

What could Ms. Franco to throughout the unit to ensure students are prepared for this summative task?

How can she use the assessment results to inform future instruction?
