In the novel, Jaqueline often listened to the world around her. She seemingly was shy/quiet, and she payed close attention to everything. There are several poems in the collection about “How to Listen”, in which Jacqueline wrote about what she heard and her thoughts about what she heard. 

• Imagine
Young Jaqueline used her imagination quite frequently throughout the memoir. In fact, the whole novel essentially revolves around her emotions and thoughts, going into depth about why she would do something, or what something meant to her. Jaqueline tells her uncle stories, creates songs, gets lost in her thoughts, writes poems and breifly imagines “other worlds”.

•Butterfly
Although this word might seem off topic on its own, butterflies have a special meaning in the context of page 249 of the novel. Jaqueline describes her first poems, which were about a butterfly. She says that “...on paper, things can live forever. On a paper, a butterfly never dies”. (Woodson 249) This phrase represents her passion for writing and her creativity, which are major factors for young Jaqueline.

• New
For Jaqueline, there were many new things and concepts throughout her childhood. She moved several times to different places, she was introduced to a new sibling, she started school, she began to write, etc. Each memory/poem resembles something new, or a new perception of something that had previously occurred. The reader is constantly introduced to new things, as Jaqueline writes about her life as she grows up.

• Home
Jaqueline had multiple homes throughout the memoir, both literally and figuratively. She moved back and forth between Grenville and New York City, and she made memories in both places. In her imagination and thoughts however, she found things that brought her comfort, similar to a home.
