One thing truly attracted me is that the author said he always wrote for one and only one reader—himself. 
The first chapter seems like a prologue. Author portrayed an aged-old, out-of-the-way, murky corner in first paragraph, and the story opens with I received a call which asked me back to Pakistan. Many sentences like “It was my past of unatoned sins” hint at something happen before, also drew me to turn to next page.
