For this piece I chose 'Movin on up' by Primal Scream as it is one of my favourite songs to date. It has a really uplifting energy to it and I connect it with positive nostalgic feelings of car rides with my uncle who introduced me to a lot of indie and rock music.

For my movement solo piece I chose to depict the car rides and the sense of joy these moments can bring. I wanted to capture how precious these moments are and highlight the innocence and care-free attitude.

In this class we were given 3 images in our partners and asked to pick one as a stimulus and create a duo piece in response to this.

Due to my absence and lack of communication unfortunately this turned into a solo piece however my partner and I have stuck to the same sequence and response we discussed when I was present.

The piece made us think about class in a social sense. We noticed how the child at the front seemed to be free and careless whereas the middle child is almost with the first however is looking back carefully at the hard working child.
The child at the front represented the elites (billionaire's etc), the middle child represented a sense of rich upper class that had a note for the working class represented through the child at the back of the boat.

We focused our piece on advantaged vs disadvantaged backgrounds and the effects it can have on children/young people growing up. I represent the disadvantaged character struggling a little bit compared to my partner, the disadvantaged representor. As the piece moves we see a shift in power as the disadvantaged child begins to overtake the advantaged.

When I tuck her into bed at night with it I feel a lot of positive nostalgia from my own times with the bear. This inspired me to create a piece that would take me back to my youth and allow me to reconnect with my inner child. As the bear is connected with bedtime I chose the theme to be an adventurous dream.

Stimulus

Audio – Formula by Labrinth (for Euphoria soundtrack)
(Link below this section)

Research

‘One of the first tracks featured on HBO’s Euphoria: A group of high school students try to discover their own identities while dealing with drugs, trauma, love, and social media.’ - https://genius.com/Labrinth-formula-lyrics

I have watched the first season and the newer episodes 2-3 times over (slightly obsessed). I was very captivated by ‘Rue’, the lead of the story who has an addiction to opioids at the young age of 17.

As drugs are the main theme at the forefront of the storyline I focused heavily on Rue's character to depict this in my piece. I wanted to highlight how regardless of resistance, people can still fall into these substance abuse issues.

Notes from this piece of visual research:

Rue’s addiction derives from access to her ill father’s strong prescriptions.

This highlights the epidemic in the USA where unmonitored prescriptions are allowing for addiction to be right at your fingertips.

The drugs become an escape and allow the characters mind to be in a safe place (mainly because its not working the same).

'Addiction is a condition in which something that started as pleasurable now feels like something you can't live without. Doctors define drug addiction as an irresistible craving for a drug, out-of-control and compulsive use of the drug, and continued use of the drug despite repeated, harmful consequences. Opioids are highly addictive, in large part because they activate powerful reward centers in your brain.' -https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/prescription-drug-abuse/in-depth/how-opioid-addiction-occurs/art-20360372

The affects when you need more become almost unbearable - like a violent itch through the body. Your mental and physical state and control is out of character as you look for the next high.

Your character can become volatile on a comedown.

I was very sure on using prescription drugs as a prop to clearly connect with the stimulus but also highlight the issues these strong drugs can have behind them. I chose a particularly small prop to show just how little in hindsight these issues can be but used my movement response to show the negative effects. For example after the overdose there is still a hunt and search for more and the clear discomfort when unable to catch the prize. I used tension to highlight this.

This connected me to feelings of gratitude and security.

For my movement piece I chose to be a mother loving and caring for her child.

Session 1:
Our first session together was as a whole rather productive. We were set on the idea of damnation vs salvation and we quickly began to focus heavily on how we could characterise ourselves while aligning with the theme. Carmen came up with the idea of an angel and devil to represent the damnation vs salvation theme and with that incorporating 2 characters to represent being influenced starting as children and working up into adulthood.

The process of choosing who would play who was fun as we did it fairly with a dice which I liked as it would mean we weren't drawing ourselves to our usual characterisation.

To represent these characters Aric and Carmen start in childs-pose with Ronan (angel) and myself (devil) stood back behind them and approaching at their 'birth' where Aric and Carmen begin to rise their levels slightly.
We toyed with the idea of Ronan and I bowing toward each other as if to say 'may the best win' before turning focus to our subjects and it worked quite well and felt very natural so we kept it. We discussed how using the chairs to position ourselves higher than the children would highlight that idea of them being watched over.
Ronan and I then will go on to mimic the children playing with the toys with an eventual clap from myself to represent the control the influence has over the subjects. The clap is a catalyst for a conflict between Aric and Carmen which allows for Ronan and I to explore the space more and we get physical with them for the first time by dragging them which again hints to the idea of heavy influence of their character.

We discussed music and we added Billie Eillish - All the good girls go to hell which worked pretty well with the piece. Another good suggestion from Carmen.

Dimitrios gave us some well rounded feedback with some ideas for Aric and Carmens conflict scene which sparked me to think about my characterisation as the devil is the clear influence of this part.

Session 2,3 and 4:
I did not attend class for these sessions which obviously put some strain on my group however I did communicate with them and was welcome to the ideas and decisions that they made in my absence as I understand the piece needed to develop further.

Carmen became the director and her ideas fitted really well with our stimulus and how we wanted to portray it. When hearing how the group developed the piece I was pleased Ronan and I had been given more use of the space we had. I also liked my switch of attention from Aric to Carmen with Ronan doing the same but opposite. Adding in clear hints to religious symbolism was very effective for the piece and particularly incorporating it with synchronisation gave a clear indication to our theme and message of control/influence.

Session 5:
On my return I was able to learn what was added comfortably and was impressed with what the group had come up with. We spoke about how we could develop the piece more and came up with the idea of 'dancing with devil.' To depict this Carmen came up with the idea of the tango dance. This first had me a little anxious as I am not really comfortably being physically close to people however to develop my skills in my career I know this is a something I need to overcome. I was eager to push through and the group were brilliant in making sure we were all comfortable with how we unfolded this idea. We added another partner switch which saw angel and devil come together which was a hint to balance in good and bad with the dance motions in sync. The dance motions also allowed us to transition to the final part of our piece that see's us all come together to help Aric who is dying/dead.

Because the dance worked so well and felt really natural after all I was eager to incorporate some music and started mixing some tango songs with the Billie Eillish one we had already decided on. These were received well by the group.

Dimitrios watched our piece and gave us an idea to add where I lay behind Aric and he turns us and stands while lifting me as I have my arms wrapped around him. For me this just didn't feel comfortable however the general idea of the transition from Aric being on the floor (after I've beat him down) worked and we thought about how we could depict this in another way.

Session 6:
We didn't move on too much today as we were missing a member of the group however the rest of us were talking about what we could do next. I was a little worried about transitions and Aric and I practiced our closer physical move more to try enhance a more natural feel to it. We felt that a full roll and myself bringing Aric back up would be most effective and it worked much better for both Aric and I's comfortability.

Session 7:
I was late today and Carmen was unfortunately not well however the boys had found others ways to transition a piece earlier in the piece where Ronan and I lift Aric and carmen from the floor to the chairs. I felt it worked well and so we will show Carmen in our next session together.

Session 8:
Carmen was still unwell however we kept practicing and i kept working with the music in between sessions and keeping the group up to date with the progress.

I wasnt sure how wed portray this in a movement sense exactly but i had some ideas to how symbolism in other factors would hint to the message.

When presenting our ideas we had similar ones and Carmen came up with the idea of 2 people representing the contrast of good and evil which we all felt would fit really well and therefore were dead set on this idea of damnation vs salvation.

I was very pleased with our final performance however I was a little disappointed that I slipped a little during the physical interaction with Aric when coming up off the floor however apart from that I feel that we had a strong performance and you can see how the piece has developed naturally even just within this week alone as we done our extra rehearsals.

We created our piece based off of ideational stimulus of damnation vs salvation. From this we discussed different aspects that related to both of these.
-For damnation we talked about sin, control, death. We symbolised all of this throughout the piece symbolically with the motions we used such as dancing with the devil/tango, control from the devil character and the clear death portrayal at the end.
-For salvation we discussed forgiveness, congregation, support. We used all of this to oppose the damnation and depict the original idea that salvation should override damnation and the overall message being you can always choose your own path.

Looking from the list I felt I fit best with the roles of elaborator, and follower.

I align with elaborator in regards to contributing to the research of music. I communicated with my group about different songs/sounds they felt would fit and sparked a social media discussion where we shared ideas of what may work.
I also spoke up constructively about the parts I was worried about such as the physical aspects and some transitions and we were able to constructively discuss how to work out these possible hinders.

I felt I also aligned with follower due to the amount of sessions I missed at the beginning of the project leaving me with no choice but to receive their ides and do my best to carry them out accordingly however the group were as a whole very supportive and happy to hear my ideas in sessions where I was present.

Bust the windows - Jazmine Sullivan

After agreeing that tango would be the best way to depict dancing with the devil I thought about this song. I remembered it from a movie where they perform a tango dance to this song as shown above. Again, the lyrics struck me for aligning with our idea of sin and consequence. The group received the idea pretty well.
