Dilemma

There is a student this year that chooses not to participate during class due to her behavior. This dilemma falls under Deliberate Instructional Planning and Implementation – Standard C6. This standard states “Appropriately Manage Classroom Procedures, Student’s Learning and Behaviors. The dilemma is that learning support as well as the classroom teacher and I cannot get this student on task to participate in class. The student’s behavior is uncontrollable. She can never stay on task or complete an assignment because she chooses not to. She has already been sent home once this year because the principal does not tolerate behavior like hers in school. Pull out and push in support is given to this student for her behavior. The learning support teacher believes that the new classroom/learning setting (switching from class to class for each content area) is overwhelming for her. Also, the amount of teachers that has control over her is beginning to be too much for her. Starting soon, a new modification is going to be made. Instead of the student carrying all of her belongings as well as keeping them with her, a learning support teacher will carry and have control of them for her. Whenever a book, pencil, notebook, etc. is needed, the learning support teacher will give it to the student when it is needed in class and then take it away when it is not needed. A sticker chart was previously set in place for this student. It worked for a few days, but then the student was not interested in earning stickers anymore. Everyone is hopeful that this new modification will be successful so that the student can be able to begin participating and learning in class.

Success

During my student teaching, I have learned that you are going to make mistakes. Making those mistakes is what makes you into the teacher you hope to become. You learn and grow from what went wrong. When you have a success, though, it brings you joy and a feeling of accomplishment; like you are doing something right. So when you have a success it is something you want to share. The success I want to share today falls under Commitment to Learning – Standard A1. This standard states “Actively Engage All Learners in the Learning Process.” While teaching, it is important that you actively engage all of your students in the classroom. The content can be boring to the students, so as a teacher you need to make it interesting for the students. Provide the students with activities that make learning fun. I did this with the most recent lesson I taught in the class. I had to come up with a final project/activity that would show the students’ knowledge and understanding for the book we were reading in class, “Freckle Juice”. The activity I chose was for the students to create their own character poster. On the character poster, the students had to draw a picture of their character as well as list and explain 4 character traits that that character possessed. I created a poster from a previous story that we had read as an example so the students could have a better understanding of what they had to do. While reading the book, the students had a planning sheet where they would identify and list a character trait after each chapter. This helped prepare the students for their final project. The activity had the students engaged because it interested them. The book also interested the students because it was funny and exciting. After each chapter it left the students wondering, “What would happen next?” Also, working together in groups to accomplish something is always more fun than doing it by yourself. They were able to work together to make the posters and I could not have been more impressed with the results. The students worked hard and it really paid off. Once all the groups were done, the students could not wait to share their posters with the rest of the class. I am planning on showcasing their posters out in the hallway for everyone to see. I cannot wait to do and incorporate more activities like these into my lessons.
