Kaiser Wilhelm had the mentality that Germany was superior and wanted to show the rest of the world how great they were. He wanted to expand his navy which made Britain uneasy so they built up their navy even more creating a race to who had the most military power.

Germany created the plan that in the event of a war they would first invade France and then Russia. This was crucial to the war because when Germany wanted to invade France they had to cross through Belgium which was a neutral country. When Germany broke Belgium´s neutrality this enraged Britain who had close ties with Belgium and caused them to declare war on Germany on August 4th.

The first battle of Marne took place in the valley of Marne northeast of Paris between the allies and the invading Germans. Almost every ally troop was used to combat the Germans resulting in their retreat. This was important to the war because after this event Germany understood they were not dealing with a swift war portrayed in the Schlieffen plan. Germany would have to fight against the French and Russians on both fronts at the same time.

Britain attacked the Germans in the valley of Somme. This battle was important to the war because it was one of the first uses of all the new military weapons and techniques and each side lost more than a half a million soldiers in the battles. Even though the armies lost so many troops they made barely any progress in their advances.

When the Russians withdrew from the war the Germans sent all their troops to the German front and smashed their way through back to the valley of Marne. By the time they got there, they were already very weak and tired. With the French realizing this they shipped in 140 thousand American troops and demolished the Germans with the use of tanks. This was a major turning point in the war because Germany lost the upper hand and the Central Power began to crumble.

As the American and French forces marched towards Germany the Bulgarians and Ottomans surrendered and the Austrians had a revolution removing them all from the war. The people of Germany turned against the Kaiser as there was no hope left for the war and he was forced to step down. When he resigned from his position Germany declared itself a Republic and German officials signed the armistice with the French. The signing of this document was a promise to end the fighting and brought an end to the bloodbath of the great war.
