The people that were accused for being witches and conspiring with the devil were most likely sent to the infamous Gallows Hill to die by hanging. More than two hundred people were accused of being witches. Thirty of those were found guilty, nineteen of whom were executed by hanging. Many people think that some of these witches were burned at the stake when actually, they were just sent to the hill to die by hanging. The youngest person to be jailed was five year old Dorothy.

Tituba was the first person to be accused of practicing witchcraft. Tituba was enslaved and owned by Samuel Parris of Denver, Massachusetts. She was entertainment for teenage girls in Salem because the teenage life was boring. During these meetings, Tituba would show these teenage girls her voodoo magic. This type of foreign influence is what sparked the accusations of witchcraft in the village. Tituba remained in jail because Samuel refused to pay her jail fees because of unknown reasons. To this day, it is unknown of what happened to Tituba.

The Puritans were a movement for reform of the Church of England. They wanted a pure religion back to when the bible was written. When Queen Elizabeth died, the Puritans were starting to be executed for practicing their own religion. They left England and settled on the Massachusetts Bay. As they arrived, they did not know how to survive so they were met by the Native Americans who showed them how to grow food and survive. The Native Americans soon realized that the Puritans were planning to take over the land so they started to attack them and killed many of their people and burned many of their villages. The Puritans believed in a theocracy, a government which blends church and state.

The majority of people accused of practicing witchcraft were women. The New England culture was that women were inherently sinful and more likely to damnation then men. The Puritans believed that men and women were equal in the eyes of God but not equal in the eyes of the Devil. Women were thought of as more weak in their vulnerable bodies. Some of those women that were accused of practicing witchcraft confessed to being witches because it was believed that the only way to survive was to confess. The women that confessed were reintegrated back into society. Women that were easy targets for being accused were ones that were unmarried or did not have children.

Calvinists broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. Calvinism is reformed Christianity which emphasizes the grace of God and the doctrine of predestination. Although not all Puritans were Calvinists, they carried many Calvinist ideas such as education is a top priority. They believed in education so much so that men could go out and be preachers and teachers of the Gospel. Women were not educated because they were thought not to be as important as education for men. It was also believed that every unlucky thing that happened to the village or a person of the village was the work of Satan.
