Main character Val is trying to go back to school for the first time in five months after her boyfriend Nick brought a gun to school and open fired in the school cafeteria. Nick killed many people before killing himself, and even shot Val in the process after she had tried and succeeded to save a student. Later on everybody learned that the people Nick killed were based out of a "hate list" that he and Val kept. Obviously they kept the book for two very different reasons, and now Val has to go back to school and learn to get over her own guilt before moving on. The story takes place mostly at her school where she flips back and forth between clips of the shooting and reality. This books ends when Val comes to terms with that day and can finally move on.

Throughout the book Val struggles to find herself again and come back to normal life where. She struggles with guilt and anxiety and with the help of a few people eventually finds herself again.

Nick Levil- Nick is basically the reason for this book. He brought a gun to school and killed many people based off of a hate list that he and Val made. She is of course encouraging to Val, but she is so overprotective. She is afraid and constantly worried about Val. On her first day back, she basically drug Val out of bed, but at the same time she was beyond nervous to see her go.

Jessica Cambell
Jessica sort of helps Val back into everything when nobody else will be her friend.

There is more than one setting in this book, like Vals home which was her sort of safe place, and her therapists office which was sort of another safe place for Val, along all of the places she bonded with Nick, but the most important setting is the school.
Valerie's high school is the place where all of her old friends don't talk to her anymore. It's the place where she makes a bond with Jessica. It's the place her boyfriend brought a gun and shot many people, including her. The school is where Valerie has flashbacks to the day of the shooting and the place where she is no longer comfortable. It's also sort of the place where she learns to get past the shooting. She learns to forgive herself here, and move on towards a better Valerie.

# 1 Person against herself

Valerie is against herself at the beginning of the book. She takes what Nick did and lets the guilt fall onto her shoulders. She thinks it was her fault, and she has to learn how to fight that. With the help of a few people, Val learns to let Nick rest and move on from that day.

# 2 Person against Person

Val's friends completely ignore if not bully her now. She was so upset at them, but she couldn't say anything because she was mad at her too. She has a lot of trouble with them because they were Nick's friends too. This is solved when Jessica Cambell sort of butts in and tries to be friends with Valerie. Although it doesn't make sense, it really helps Val out in getting back to a normal life.

#3 Person Against Society

Val's name was in the paper, she was everywhere. She was known as the girl who took part in this, but had nothing to do with it at all. It was really hard and she didn't know what to do. She was a target and everybody stared at her. She was bullied over it, and nobody wanted to be her friend. Once again, she got over this because Jessica Cambell was the first the sort of step up and basically be like hey, I want to be your friend. This helped Val a lot and was exactly what she needed.

"Everybody deserves somebody"

I chose this because I thought it was really cool of Jessica Cambell to help out Val in getting back to her life. She was alone and sad, and nobody wanted to be her friend. She was somebody that was basically falling off of the face of the earth until Jessica came along. Although it was weird, and maybe Val didn't deserve exactly her as a friend, but she reached out and Val basically grabbed her hand. She was so helpful to Val and really helped her get over everything and start fresh. Thats why I chose "everybody deserves somebody" as my theme!

I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was really good, but the ending was just predictable to me. I enjoyed it and thought it was heartfelt to say the least, but at the same time, it drug on for a while. I this this a really realistic story, and I thought it was important towards some situations. Overall, I would recommend this book!
