In 1811, iodine was discovered by French chemist Bernerd Courtois. the name Iodine was suggested because iode is the latin work meaning violet gas. Iodine is the fourth halogen below fluorine, chlorine, and bromine; it is the heaviest member of its group. Though it is the least reactive of the halogens, iodine is still one of the more reactive elements.
