This allows us to make general predictions about when, where and how severe a future earthquake might be, which in turn allows us to make earlier preparations to mitigate possible damage caused by future earthquakes.&nbsp;<br><br>Ex: For example, earthquake motion data is gathered from hundreds of observation stations installed along bridges and roads in Japan.&nbsp;<br><br>A: Installing such sensors in earthquake-prone zones helps to monitor the frequency of vibrations and detect the possible developments of an earthquake, allowing for early earthquake warnings and more time for people to make preparations to mitigate damage of the earthquake.&nbsp;<br><br>L: However, installing such sensors expensive to produce, install and run. The warnings might also occur too late, giving people not enough time to prepare adequately for it. Furthermore, device failure might lead to false alarms, causing widespread panic for nothing and wasting a lot of resources used in the preparation for the mitigation of damage from the earthquake.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

These stations monitor ground motion and enable the occurrence of an earthquake to be predicted. They can also be used to estimate damage to bridges, railways and other such infrastructure.<br><br>A: Installing earthquake sensors in earthquake-prone zones helps monitor the frequency of vibrations and detect possible developments of an earthquake. Such sensors are able to quickly estimate damage to bridges, railways or other infrastructure and hence mitigate the damage to these buildings. It also gives people in the area more time to evacuate and prepare for the earthquake as it is identified earlier and hence mitigate loss of lives as well.&nbsp;<br><br>L: However, earthquake sensors are expensive to obtain, install and use. An earthquake usually occurs only seconds after a warning is sounded, hence there is not enough time to evacuate. It is also difficult to give accurate warnings if multiple earthquakes occur close to one another.</div>]]></description>
