Riding a mule or burro was a lot safer than walking barefoot on the trail. The square was almost like a street and had holes that were made to plant trees. The people don't use the plaza for much because it's all just very plain. "There was no police, no fire departments, no post office, no public library...The shrunken, sun-beaten plaza was there nevertheless, solitary except when children played in it or passing mule drivers rested under the shades of its trees."
