Using specialised software

Above is an image of using the ARISFish software to identify and mark fish species which the sonar had captured. I had learned to use the software to aid in processing of the data for the Gunbower dataset. This achieves one of my goals in using proprietary software in order to collate datasets and process imagery specific to fish ecology. This will hopefully add to my skillset in experience suing this particular software.

Learning to code

An integral part to processing large chunks of data within the industry is familiarising myself with coding, particularly the coding language R. I had used RStudio to aid in the processing of the data and running the code that is necessary to collating data that is readable and understandable. The majority of the coding was done by either of my supervisors however they had allowed me the opportunity to play with their own code, see how it works and modify it to make the outputs a bit more user friendly. This experience has significantly increased my knowledge in coding with R and in doing so, will be beneficial to future career outcomes.

GIS mapping

Another skill I had learned is using mapping software to mark out the already chosen points which were allocated for us to survey. The easiest and most straight forward method of this was using Google Earth Pro which is downloaded onto a computer rather than running in a browser. This allowed me to familiarise myself with google earth pro, how to plot certain maps and use overlays of the maps to make them a little clearer. I have had some experience with Google Earth Pro and other mapping GIS software such as ARCGIS however this had greatly increased the depth and knowledge of how the software works which is extremely handy in the job prospects I am willing to pursue.
