Pre-modern globalization (also called as proto-globalization or early globalization) refers to a period between 15th and 18th centuries in long distance trade, cultural exchange, and formation in global connections before the rise of colonialism and industrialization. In this period, it was driven by ancient trade routes like the Silk road connecting East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, that allowed the movement of goods such as silk, spices, and precious metals allowing for the exchange in knowledge, technologies (paper and printing), and even diseases (The Black Death). It was also the spread of empires, religions (Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity), and cultural exchange: artisans, scholars, arts, language, and institutions. Even if its limited compared to the present globalization, it helped the foundation of globalization in connecting the world we have today.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram have completely changed the way people communicate by making it a true two way process. Unlike traditional media where news and information only flowed in one direction, social media allows users to instantly react, comment, and share their own perspectives. A viral video or hashtag can start in one country and quickly spread across the globe, creating conversations that cross cultural and geographic boundaries. This constant exchange not only helps people feel connected to global communities but also gives individuals a chance to influence discussions on important issues. The rise of these platforms shows how globalization thrives on communication that is fast, interactive, and participatory.

Starbucks is one of the examples of how cross-cultural communication that shapes the success of global businesses. In every country it enters the company studies local traditions and preferences to adapt its menu, such as offering Matcha Lattes in Japan while Ube Macchiatos in the Philippines. These menu changes are not just about taste, but about building respect and connection with customers by showing that their culture and identity are valued. This careful adaptation allows Starbucks to maintain its global brand while still celebrating diversity through localized flavors and designs. It demonstrates that successful globalization depends on recognizing and honoring cultural differences rather than ignoring them.

Through communication it allows countries to focus on their economic strengths by specializing in products or services and trading with others for what they lack. This specialization enables efficient use of resources, boosting overall economic productivity and growth. For example, a country rich in agricultural products can trade with a country that excels in manufacturing, benefiting both through resource sharing. Communication exposes people worldwide to diverse cultures, which fosters empathy and encourages mutual respect. This cultural exchange promotes international collaboration, peace, and social harmony as individuals and nations learn to appreciate differences and work together toward common goals.

What is cultural exchange?

Cultural exchange is the process of sharing part of one's culture to someone who have a different cultural background and vice versa.

-As shown in the video, world tours can be a tool for cultural exchange to happen. This may not be a traditional process for cultural exchange, but it fosters the same goal with the traditional ones; to share unique culture, musical style, fashion and artistry. Music festivals, world tours, and live concerts showcase the artist's culture into a large diverse audience by performing. The artist also learns the culture of the audience by interacting with them mid performance.

Gap’s international franchise overpowers standard/traditional clothing by promoting an established/ consistent identity in fashion that highlights casual and simplicity. The endorsement of Western fashion aesthetic internationally by GAP makes apparels/clothing look more and more the same in many different locals across different nation.
