2a You're going to read an article about competency-based interviews. Have you heard about them? What do you know about them?

A different kind of interview

Competency-based job interviews are becoming more and more common. Rather than asking people simply to list their achievements and previous jobs, interviewees are asked about events, for example:

1 Describe a time you successfully used your communication skills.

2 Tell us about when someone challenged a decision you had made and how you managed the situation.

3 Describe a failure you had at work or in education.

Using this technique, employers can match your answers to specific skills (or competences) such as how well you communicate, and find out more about your performance in a job. When it comes to answering these questions, you should start by explaining the situation you were in and the task you had to complete. You should then talk about what action you took and what the results were.
It is important to be positive even when describing a failure. Do this by showing you understand why you failed and then giving an example of how the lesson you learnt has improved your performance. Follow these steps to be sure of success in your next job interview!
