Briefly, TARCiS provides critical guidance on (i) when and (ii) how to conduct citation searching as a supplementary search technique in systematic evidence syntheses, and (iii) on how to report it. It is hoped that TARCiS will lead to the standardization of these processes and that systematic review teams will incorporate TARCiS into their workflows.

As to (i): It is important to emphasize that TARCiS does not universally recommend the use of citation searching in systematic evidence syntheses. Thus, the TARCiS statement can also be used as a rationale for the informed omission of citation searching when appropriate.

As to (iii): The TARCiS reporting item checklist is in line with PRISMA-S but providing enhanced reporting standards (in fact, there has been a significant overlap in the PRISMA-S and the TARCiS study groups).

This series targets those with foundational knowledge of systematic reviews who want to stay updated on AI developments in evidence synthesis.

Key features of the ReMarQ tool include:

1)      It assesses only the methodology, and is therefore agnostic to study type.

2)      It explicitly asks whether the body of evidence (beyond risk of bias) was assessed—for example, through use of GRADE.

3)      It includes several questions related to the search strategy and its transparency.

4)      Early indications suggest it may be quicker to use than AMSTAR 2.

For Basic (non subscription) users, reports always extract data from up to 10 papers, no matter how many papers are found and screened in earlier steps. Elicit Plus, Pro, and Team users can optionally extract from more papers per report.

Automation through AI is key to unlocking the potential of real-time, dynamic evidence generation creating substantial efficiencies in evidence generation efforts. While AI tools have made significant headway in supporting these processes, challenges and opportunities lie ahead. Integration between tools to facilitate data synthesis remains a prominent gap. Different review topics may require tailored synthesis methods, therefore interoperability between tools is crucial to ensure a smooth flow of data between SLR stages while the necessity for human oversight can build trust in the automated process. Recent examples of automated analysis and reporting for comparative analyses and health economic modeling using open codes have also been proposed, suggesting a wider application of AI tools is possible to allow a real-time monitoring of new evidence in decision-making.
