Hello everyone,

Allow me to kick things off with a hearty Salam and a big hi!

I embarked on this teaching journey back in 2018, and ever since, my wavering focus has been on nurturing a fervent interest in plant disease and plant pathology among my students. It's been an incredible ride, and I've had the pleasure of teaching some truly enthusiastic individuals over the years. This passion is what keeps me on the lookout for ways to make BGT302 even more captivating!

Let's spice it up with some fun facts about me:

1. My academic journey led me to a bachelor's degree from USM's School of Biological Sciences. My major? Microbiology. But as fate would have it, I wound up in the Agrobiology program.

2. Curiously enough, back during my undergraduate days, I had no intention of becoming a microbiologists (suits and ties weren't my cup of tea) or an agrobiologist (no offense to botanists, but plants just weren't my jam).

3. It was during my final year that I crossed paths with a lecturer from the Agrobiology program. I decided to do my final year project under his guidance. That's when the world of plant pathology opened up to me, and as they say, the rest is history.

4. What's even more interesting is that all electives courses during my degree had nothing to do with agrobiology, and my final year project had zero connection to the plant world (it was all about indoor air fungi)!

The takeaway here is simple one: Don't let the boundaries of your major limit your exploration of what piques your interest. The sky truly is the limit!

Now, what I absolutely adore about teaching this course is the opportunity to interact more closely with my students. This is a practical course, you see. It's during these hands-on moments that we exchange ideas, share thoughts, and get to know each other better.

For me, the beauty of plant disease diagnosis is akin to playing the role of a detective. There's a checklist to follow, clues to uncover, and puzzle to solve before we arrive at a diagnosis. It's almost like what medical doctors do when diagnosing a patient. But the best part? My "patients" (the plants) will never voice a single complaint! ;)

I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing all of you in class. Let's embark on this exciting journey together!

Assalamualaikum and hi Dr. Hafizi and fellow friends. My name is Azri. In picture, I was in the lab introducing me that lab is my place to do research.

1. My passion in agrobiology starts when I though Biotechnology only focus on lab. I am kind of the person like to see green environment and blue sky because it makes me feels alive. In naruto, it is like a chakra to myself, haha.

2. I am expecting this course to learn about plant disease, insects that torture plant and how to overcome it.

3. My though about "Plant Disease Diagnosis Article" is we need to identify the plant disease problem by asking the question to ourselves about the problems and observation about the plant diseases to solve the problems of plant diseases. It may take a week to identify the problems of the plant disease.

Last but not least, I hope we enjoy learning with Dr. Hafizi and be a good agrobiologist in the future.

2. I have deep passion for plants (botany) but i chose agrobiology for my major :D For me studying different kind of plants and see the variability of their usage across the globe is interesting. Hehe i also like to search for native fruits which are rare (as they are commercially unavailable). So i like to collect them and plant them.. This is where my interest in agrobiology pop up. however, turn out after around three years of planting those native fruits.. My plant will always be infected by unknown disease and i can just watch them die =, =

3. My expectation for this course is.. It can give me a new skill.. A skill to save my plants.. at least i can try to do something rather than just watch them die.. Hehe i do acknowledge that the skill of plant diagnosis is not just limited to domestic use only.. it also plays great economic importance as well.. Hehe i do note that there will be upcoming advanced plant patho lab course in the final year so i hope i can understand this course to be able to understand the next one much much better :D

4. Hohoo to be frank this article excites me along the way.. From the intro to the final words which includes some of diseased signs (with pic) . The article emphasize on observing plant.. Like really observe them.. Even the tip of the leaf and the margin of the leaf can show signs of diseased plants.. I like the statement "u have to really know the plant u re working with".. And yess i took plant taxonomy paper last year as audit course and i am pretty sure a single species can have many cultivars.. Anddd im surprised that knowing cultivars can help with diagnosis as well as some cultivars might be resistant to the pathogen and some might not.. This article also show how important is other subjects previously taken and will be taken in making a diagnosis.. As it will consider many aspects such as soil, weather, microbs and insects. It shows that in order to understand plant pathology, we need to understand all of the other subjects simultaneously

Salam sejahtera and good evening to Dr and my fellow friends, I am Lucas Lim Wei Tze, come from The Land of Hornbills, Sarawak. My hometown is a ecologically diverse area that host many flora and fauna. So I like to explore around with my friend. I have a pet, is a rottweiler breed of dog. I like to bring her around and sitting car because she is very obedient and quiet. My hometown also serve good dishes which I think y'all if have chance should come and try hehe.....

Secondly, the main reason that I would major in Agrobiology is mainly because I like plant, but my primary interest is not on flower that for mainly decoration purpose, but on those medicinal and edible plant. Additionally, I very like to grow plant and seeing plant to grow bigger and bigger, I've been growing bayam, okra, peppermint, and paychoy in USM, for now is just outside my room, with new species coming in- spring onion and dwarf tomato. Next, back in my hometown, I've also have planted some plants, but some grow well whereas some did not. But for my most proud growing of plant I have to take account in that I grown pandan without soil, it just stick on the wall, absorbing the passing by leaking soil water from nearby pot and now become a bushy pandan in my house, but la.... my dog likes to bite it off, so somehow like it's abit 'botak' at the bottom part. So, I am a person who enjoyed growing plant, so hopefully next time I would be a farmer hehe...... And yes, Agrobiology is my FIRST CHOICE since I just enter USM.

Nevertheless, from this course, I do expect that I would have a stronger knowledge on plant disease and its cause, and the background interaction of one and another. By having a clear understand on plant pathogen and disease, hence we can only find the correct way (may be some antibacterial or fungicide) to control or manage the 'sick plant'. So hope after this course, I would have basic knowledge on being a 'plant doctor' to diagnose plant disease and give the correct 'medicine'.

Lastly, after reading the article, it actually impressed me that actually plant disease are not only can be visible when the affected area is large, because I only used to diagnose plant disease and finding the reasons after I seeing plant is having a bigger affected area including the curling of leave and the fungus affected area. So now if I look into the plant, I would look like form the 'head to toe and to the tip' to ensure the disease of a plant might get. So I can more precisely identify the symptoms show by the plant as well as the sign of cause of disease. As in mentioned in the article, a species with different cultivar may have different resistance, this make me recall the 'Big mike/Gros michel' banana and Panama disease, and now the left the cavendish banana....... but we can't do much as back to 1950's there are limited knowledge and access to information so yalah, we will have no more chance to taste the said most sedap banana. But now Cavendish banana actually also having diseases that spreading around, but thanks to sciences and technologies, it still under control so we still have banana to eat hehehe.

1. Hello everyone. My name is Jason Kong Wei Zhe. I come from Sibu, Sarawak. My hometown got a lot of delicious food like Kompia and Kampua. Welcome all of you come to my hometown and try.
2. My passion in agrobiology starts when I find that I don't like to stay in lab whole day and do research only. I like to go outside and approach the environment. Besides,my hometown is full of economic crops like oil palms. So I would like to explore and learn more about them. I like to apply my knowledge on increasing crop yield of certain plants. Therefore, I chose Agrobiology as my major.
3. I expected to gain more knowledge about the plant diseases and the causes of those plant diseases. From this course, I also hope to learn new skills to treat plants through understanding the application of 'medicine' for plants.
4. My though after reading the article is I was able to know new knowledge about identifying the plant disease. By observing the plants with our naked eyes, we can know that the plants are healthy or sick. For the inner causes of plant diseases, what we have to do is observing the components of plants by using microscope.

1. Hi everyone. I'm Wong Jin Ji. I'm from Perak. My hometown is Bidor which is a small town with lots of agricultural products like petai, guava, oil plam and so on.

2. My first choice is agrobiology which means that I'm like planting. At home, I planted many flowers n veggies. However, I faced a lot of problems when planting because of diseases, improper amount of fertilizer, pest (especially aphids, I very hate them), heat, rain and so on. Many plants had died on my hand but I'm still very interested in them.

3. Therefore, in this course I hope I will be able to learn how to detect plant diseases and try to cure or prevent it.

4. From the article, I learnt that there are many diseases that cause different kind of symptoms. I can recall back many of my plants die due to pathogens like root rot. Now I know that where to to look for the diseases in the plant so that I can identify they.

2. My major is microbiology. After my internship period, I decided to research more on microbe (especially fungi and bacteria) in food industry field and explore more further knowledge.

3. I expected to familiar the basic techniques that used in plant pathology which can also help me in my final year project as well. Besides, I hope I can gain more experience and techniques to solve the plant disease through the practical lesson.

2. Majoring in agrobiology is my first choice becauseeeee I was pursued by my mom. My house was surrounded by many kind of plant that planted by my mom. I love to plant something that possible to be planted but hard lah nak jaga cause not enough knowledge yet. For example I used to plant apple, lemon, watermelon and strawberry. They grew up big and well. But now RIP to them. So many pest that attracted only to them, my apple leaves got rust, the watermelon 'terbantut' and the strawberry no fruit at all just a healthy leaf. All the seeds I got from the fruit that I bought from supermarket.

3. I dont know how to express my expectation with this course. But all I want right know is to learn it very well and share all the knowledge I can about plant to my family, peeps and especially to the people who have a thought that agrobiology is useless 🔪.

2. Agro was my first choice since my sophomore year in degree. Had a change of heart. Don't really know why but all I can say is the prospect of producing food seems exciting.

3. Honestly, I'm not patient enough to do diagnostics about diseases. However, I do resonate with Dr. with the fact that plant doesn't talk which makes life bearable. So love or hate relationships seem irrelevant. I wanna learn about the practicals that would prepare me for a farming career. Hopefully, it's more practical than it is theoretical.

4. I learned that plants are as messed up as we are if not more. So many problems. Sometimes there are even layers to the sound diagnostic. Bizarre scientific terms describe thousands and thousands of different diseases. All in all, it's a reference in regard to the best possible outcome of trials and errors to define and justify the underlying problems through scientific interventions, observation, and analysis.

2. My major is Agrobiology. I had interest in agriculture when I saw the paddy harvester machine. I thought it is very cool and I wish I could have a chance to drive it. Moreover, I felt it was very hard for the farmer to take care such a large area of paddy. So, I want to pursue my study in agriculture so I could help them to reduce workload while increase the yield. Another reason is my parents always bringing me to exhibitions, mainly about wars and food crisis. This also gives a little impact on me. I hope that I make some tiny contribution to the food crisis issue.

2. I have a passion for the nature because it is mesmerizing isn't? I think i start have passion on plant due where i grew up. My home yard is big and my parent loveeee gardening. They plant flower, vegetables, and fruits. As i grew up, i always help they manage the plant, watering them, feed them a fertilizer, take care of them. I enjoy doing that and pique my interest to take Agrobiology as my first choice major.

1. Hi everyone. My name is Tan Ting Zhen. I come from Jerantut, Pahang, a place where surrounded by a lot of oil palm plantation.

2. I really admire the life of having a land that grow with many kinds of plants. I think I am influenced a lot by my parents who in love with planting. Study in agrobiology can help me to master the skill to treat the plants well and able to harvest health crops. Therefore, I can live closer to the nature since I really like the slow tempo in village. These reasons lead me to major in agrobiology.

3. I expected to learn a lot about the plant diseases in term of distinguish them and their mechanism. Plus, ways to deal, cure or prevent those diseases.

4.From the articles, I have some basic ideas on how to identify the plant diseases. However, we must be bear in mind that there are a lot of possibility for even one disease based on the symptoms. Many clues have to be compared and finally do the correct diagnosis.

1. People say " tak kenal maka tak cinta", it sounds funny when I hear the phrase, I think the first step to knowing the person and others is introducing yourself. Assalamualaikum and good evening Dr! I am Ahmad Ikmal Hakimi Bin Mohd Nor Azim. Dr can call me Ikmal. I am from Banting, Selangor.

2. The reason for my major decision is I want to learn more about the plant. In my opinion, the plant has their own unique characteristics which are helpful for them to adapt to their surroundings. It can ensure them to grow properly and we as humans can utilize it for our life. Besides, my home is surrounded by many plants such as banana trees, pineapple trees, sugarcane trees and palm oil trees. In the beginning, there were only palm oil trees then my father likes to plant the other trees because it is his hobby and one of the ways to release his stress. Sometimes, I help him and I learn a lot about the plant even it is a common plant for us like banana and pineapple. He teaches me how to know and identify whether the plant is in good condition so it can bear fruit well. His explanation has caught my interest to know more and go deeper about the plant. As we know, there are a lot of plant pathogens that can affect them. I found it among the trees around my home too. I felt curious about how it could happen? Is the insect can cause it too by transferring the pathogens from one plant to another? Is it can be eliminated? if not how we can control it? Therefore, I choose agrobiology for my major to help me to understand more about plants.

3. The thing that I expect from this course is it will be fun. It will be better when you are enjoying and having fun when learning. You will be eager to know about it. I am sure Dr can guide us to get the knowledge which can help us to understand about the plants. For me, it is necessary because we can educate others about the plants as they are crucial in sustaining food production. Other than that, I will learn about the scientific techniques that can be used to diagnose plant pathogens as well.

4. My thoughts after reading the article 'Plant Disease Diagnosis' are it is important to distinguish between the normal plant and the affected plant. It is crucial part to identify the particular plant to ensure it can grow properly. Besides, there are many factors that can affect the plants such as biotic and abiotic factors. It can determine which causes the plant disease and we can manage it properly. Other than that, we know the plant is affected by observing the symptoms and signs on the parts of the plant.

Last but not least, I hope everyone will enjoy learning this course because we will take it once during our degree journey. I am sure it would not be easy but worth it for our future. Take the opportunities because we are the chosen ones.

2. I chose agrobiology as my major because I know that plants are one of the most important thing for us humans to continue living, so that's how I become interested in how to care and treat plants.

assalamualaikum and good evening everyone, I'm SITI NORHAZIQA, you can call me, Hazi. I'm from Shah Alam, Selangor. I'm a newbie in applied sc. since i just changed my program from pure before my final exam of 2nd year , hopefully you can bear with me 🥹 and could get to know more everyone in future classes.

Actually I'm really passionate about learning things, the origin, the interactions, the background of living things, basically the theory part. Initially i am not very confident to enter the applied since i'm not that good to conduct lots of projects or fit enough to do the outside projects trip. However, lots of things happened and I somehow have the heart to try the agrobiology as my first step in applied world ✊. Hopefully my heart, body and mind will be open and good enough to learn those skills and knowledge.

Since I'm not familiar with this field, I'm planning to learn more and analyse further which part of it that suits me (either medical, food, horticulture etc).

As I read that article, it really align with my curiosity about the whole plant pathology itself since I don't have that knowledge nor interest previously. It's really answer my question on how those 'plant-lover' influencers treat their plants or how they try to treat 'sick' plant (as my knowledge in this field only based on my daily dose of media social 🌚) . In those social media videos, they usually only show small part of how they save the plants by cutting particular wilted part etc but they do not explain what cause the plant sick or wilted at the first place. By chance, this article really help explaining the 'behind the scene' of those videos by which it impressed me on how many steps, knowledge, techniques, skills have been involved.

Provided diagrams for the commonly observed symptoms and signs really help me familiarise myself with the plant for the first-timer.

Hopefully this course will help me learn more on how to love (like if it's not possible🥹) , care and treat the if it's possible.

1) Hello and Assalamualaikum to everybody. My name is Norhidayati Binti Md Ghazali, however you can call me Yatiey if you want. I'm in my third year of studies, majoring in agrobiology.

2) My parents were the most influential in my decision to major in agrobiology. I used to watch my parents plant flowers and fruits when I was a kid, but it didn't interest me because I thought it was a boring hobby. But then my mother encouraged me to go outdoors and try to plant flowers on my own. I thought it was an easy task at first but it was much harder than it looks. So then I became more interested in plants and eventually fell in love with them. And it has now inspired me to major in agrobiology so that I may understand more about plants.

3) I hope by the end of this subject, i can understand more about the plant pathology and have the basic practical that was used in plant pathology.

4) After reading the article, i just thought "wow, there's a lots of information there". But what i can summarize is one of the most significant components of a plant pathologist's education is diagnosis. Disease control procedures can be a waste of time and money if the disease and the disease-causing agent are not properly identified. This can lead to additional plant losses. As a result, accurate disease diagnosis is critical.

Assalamualaikum and hi! My name is Husna Farihah but you can just call me Husna. I'm from Klang, Selangor.

Ever since I was a kid, besides planting flowers, my parents love to grow their own vegetables and fruits such as papayas and chillies. My grandfather also owned an orchard with banana trees, langsat trees and rambutan trees. So, i always ask them about the plant and i think these might be one of the factors that help to develop my passion towards plants and chose agrobiology as my first choice.

I expect this course to help me to understand plants better because usually I'm attracted to them because of their beauty, fruits and uniqueness. I once thought that the some abnormal plant is weird because the appearance is different when compared to the same species that i found.

After reading the article, I think that plants are much complicated than human when we want to diagnose a disease. As a human , we participate the diagnosing process by telling the doctor what we felt. But, plants have different way to express their sickness and it depends solely on observers' observation to realize it. Hence, we need to observe the plants in detail without ignoring any symptoms , signs or other factors to get an accurate diagnose of the plant disease and to carry out the correct way to overcome the disease.

2. I am an owl lover. And that made it obvious why i want to be in agrobiology majoring. In meantime, i want to have a better understanding on crops and plants.

3. The expectations from this course are obvious; learning the diseases and cures as well. I am sure that this practical sessions are worth the time.

4. From the article, we can't rely solely on the symptoms. Plants are just like humans. Sometimes we misdiagnosis ourselves with visible symptoms which looks the same. But the proper way is to conduct several tests so that we could minimize the list of diagnosis.

2. Argobiology was my first choice because I like to observe the plants that I planted grow up healthily. I also like to observe them and feel sad if anything happened to them.

3. I know this course can help me to identify the plant diseases and ways to treat them.

4. After reading the article, I feel that it is not an easy task to identify plant diseases. We need a lot of knowledge and know how normal plant should be. Besides that, there are environmental factors that can cause the same symptoms. And lastly we should stay open minded before every information there is prove that the plants are infected by the disease we assume in the first place.

2. I choose agrobiology as my first choice because I really love to become part of the nature ^^ I really want to explore & learn more about plants, how to control the disease and others. I love hiking & gardening. Plants also like humans how their behavior act, they need food, nutrient and others to survive same like humans but they can't tell us if they are sick. I hd visited MARDI for few times actually so it literally gives impact on me and increase the curiosity on me.

3. What I expect for this course is I wish I could learn the technique and skills of how to identify the plant disease, what caused it and how to control and cure them. Yes! The plants can't talk so it is our responsibility to be more alert about them as sometimes, the symptoms and signs are much similar to another. I hope I can gain a lot of experience during the studies and applied it in the future. I'm looking forward for it!

4. From the article, I had learnt that by observing the plants with only our naked eyes, it's not enough for us to detect the disease as it only represent whether the plants are healthy or sick. Yes. Literally there are many disease we can detect through different kind of signs or symptoms. By doing a proper way of diagnosis is very crucial on the growth of the plants. Honestly, I don't really love plant or nature like you all does but yeah, I admit that nature is so beautiful. Choosing a major is not always an easy decision. I need to consider future prospects. I think having a background in agrobiology can lead to diverse career paths. It's never too late to explore different interests and passions. Since I already studied agriculture in high school, I think it will be easier for me to catch up in class.

Additionally, when having a background in agrobiology, I expect that I can explore topics such as crop science, soil health, pest management and sustainable farming practices. I also expect to engage in hands-on experiences, conducting experiments in the lab and out in the field.

After going through the article, I can identify various diseases by observing different symptoms. I can also determine the well-being of plants by assesing whether they are in good health or sick.

2. Before this, I didn't have any interest towards plants, but since I read an article about the evolution of plants by agrobiologist, I get attached to this field. I was amazed with how agricultural biotechnology manipulates and understands the genetic makeup of agricultural products to produce more quality crops.

3. From this course, I do hope I can identify signs and symptoms of plant diseases on my own and see the disease in reality and not only rely on with articles in Google.

4. From the article, I just discovered about the symptoms of diseases in plants. Before this, I thought that plants have shapes on their leaves, but ohh, it was actually because of the mosaic and ringspot symptoms 😅

Hi everyone! My name is Nurin Farisha, you can can call me Nurin. I am from Gurun, Kedah. As you know, Kedah is surrounded by a lot of paddy field field.

2. The decision of choosing agrobiology as my major is because of I love nature. Actually, I would like to take entomology as my major because by considering of what everyone be saying that entomologists will have a brighter future in working. However I am scared of insects. But the end of the day, agrobiology studies also need to do the insect collection. I guess this is my fate, so yeah I accept with an open heart and mind🥹

3. The things that I expect form this course is I hope that I will get to know more about plant, what cause of the plant diseases, how to overcome it and many more. By the time being, I can get more amaze about everything related to plant.

4. After reading the article, I realised that the disease that affected the plant can be detected by observing the symptoms. Different symptom leads to different diseases. We need to patient and and observe the symptoms carefully to make a perfect diagnosis. We are plant’s Doctor right😆

Assalammualaikum, hai everyone 😙 I am Nur Ain Humaira and you can call me Ain or Humaira (cause Ain is a common name so we might have another Ain in the class)

At first I didn’t even consider to take Agrobiology but after the majoring talk and semester break, I thought that maybe this major will give me many benefits as I learned that my grandfather had fruit orchard but stopped as he fell sick and no one was able to continue taking care of it. Plus my father participated in palm plantation so me taking Agrobiology might be helpful.

My expectations for this course is that I would be able to develop my interest towards Agrobiology more and learned many things that can be beneficial to myself and others around me!

After reading the article, I realised that being an Agrobiologist is an important job as plant is one of the major food source for us. Without understanding plant pathology we might actually encounter bigger problem in the future. Plant pathology is much bigger than just understanding plant but we also need to understand other factor to identify a disease. We also a detective but for plants🌱
