The American Dream is about oportunity. It is something that is available to everyone from anywhere. Each individual has their own goals that they would want to achieve. Everyone has their own interpretations and ways of achieving it. However, it is the belief of gaining a better life. To me the American Dream is having a long healthy life.

Interview

I chose to interview my mom and her American Dream was to have a beautiful family, stable home, and free health insurance. She also wanted to be able to support her family and have a safe place and environment to raise her children. Since she was young, she has always been passionate about becoming a nurse. Throughout her childhood she has been in many serious scenarios where it was based on something medical, so in a way that was what had first influenced her decision. When asked if the American Dream was realistic to achieve she said yes although it does require a lot of work and perseverance. She also said that determination was a big key in achieving it because no mater what you have to go through, you have to keep pushing because eventually you will get to where you want to. A piece of advice that she left was that good things take hard work and dedication to accomplish, but at the end once you have achieved it, you will be proud of yourself.

This song defends my thesis because it talks about how he made his American Dream. This song is about how throughout your journey there will be people who will doubt you, but once you have achieved your American Dream, you have proven them wrong. In the song he says, "I swear them streets get so tricky, glad I ain't fall for the bait". These lyrics say that you will go through some rough times where some people tend to quit, but if you keep pushing through, you will get to where you want to be. In the song he also says, "So focused and I'm determined, can see that ___ in my face". By this he is saying that determination is a key point into achieveing your American Dream because it is one of the things that can keep you motivated from giving up.

Poem

This poem defends my thesis because it is based on a rose that followed its dreams. This poem is about a rose that taught itself everything it needed to know in order to survive even when it was said it wasnt going to. In the poem it says,"funny it seems but by keeping its dreams it learned 2 breath fresh air". This phrase shows how the rose was able to learn the things it needed to survive and how we will be able to succeed if we do the same. The poem also says, "long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else cared!". By this he is saying that many people walk the opposite way or turn an eye when they see others struggling, so when you are at your struggling point you have to depend on youself and be encouraged to get up to keep on going.

This cartoon was made in 2009 but was based on how people saved the American Dream in 1948. It was made to create a deeper meaning of what the American Dream was and how America was the best place where anything was possible. In the begining of the video it talks about how the American Dream has a different meaning to all of us. Around 2:20 there is a man offereing a bottle called Dr. Utopia and claims that it cures any element of the body body politic and starts listing the benefits that the people want. He continues to say that it wont cost them anything but to sign a paper that is basically giving away their freedom to him. They were all deperate but John Q Public who rejected his offer and said that although their system of free enterprise wasnt perfect it still allowed them the freedom to think and do anything they wanted. He then on gave and example of a guy named Joe Doaks who had an idea and because he was free to dream his dream, he had the chance to make something of his idea and of himself and no matter what people thought of his ideas he didnt stop and then it later turned into something that he would have never thought of and it had a positive effect in the world. This supports my thesis statement because America is a place where we are given the freedom to do and dream anything and if we really wanted to make it happen we had to work hard and keep pushing until our American Dream has come true.

Reyna Grande has many references to the American Dream throughout her book, but one that stood out to me the most was in her epilogue. She says, "I became the first person in my family to graduate from college" (Grande 319). This supports my thesis because she grew up in poverty and has had many challenges that she has had to face throughout her life. Some of the challenges she has had to face was being abandoned by her parents, not being able to have a good meal, living in poor conditions, having to deal with trauma such as mental and physical abuse, and she struggled learning english and feeling as if she could ever fit in. Her father had told her to not ever give up on education and to finish school to get a good job and live a wealthy life out of poverty. This has stuck to her more than her sibblings and even though there were times where she was discouraged or something had made her want to quite, she had always pushed through and finished her education. What she reveals about achieving the American Dream is that it is possible for anyone as long as you are determined and never give up even when you feel discouraged.

In this article, there are many people who give their insights on what the American Dream is to them and how they have accomplished it. Not only does this article give peoples opinions of the American Dream, but it also gives statistics that they have found. In the article it says, "85 percent indicated that "to have freedom of choice in how to live" was essential to achieving the American dream"(Abrams). This shows how freedom is the key to being able to dream, think and to do anything we set our American Dream to be. Most people believe that you can only achieve the American Dream if you are a specific race, but in the article it says, "Eighty-one percent of non‐Hispanic whites; 80 percent of blacks, Hispanics and those of mixed race; and 85 percent of those with Asian heritage said that they had achieved or were on their way to achieving the American dream" (Abrams). Although some people think that others get an "advantage", this quote shows how it doesnt matter your ethnicity, it maters how much effort you are willing to put towards achieve your dream and that the only thing that is holding you back is yourself.
