Dr. Roylott is the physically abusive step-father that is consistently trying to get in the way of the Sherlock and Watson in the search to discover what happened to Ms.Stoner's wife. While he does not fit the mold of a "monster" in its truest sense for example green skin and covered in warts and outlandishly tall, Dr.Roylott still treats the step-daughters with disrespect and aggression. His main intent, while not explicitly implied, is to make sure the girls never get married and possibly don't stay living in order to get all the money from his late wife, the girls mother. After all, it is his freakish obsession with expensive pets that gets the first daughter killed. 

Orangutan - Murder in Rue Morgue - Edgar Allen Poe

The Orangutan was the true murderer in Poes, mysterious and truthfully tangled story. In the physical copy of the story, there is a massive ape creature crouched next to the dead body of the woman that it just murdered. It's huge in size and has the primal instincts that humans think separates them from their earlier counterparts. Goodman Brown was changed after he came back out of the forest.

This story and this visual motif represent human nature in a negative light. The activities at night in the forest, real or not, represent a shadow to the rigid, moralistic Puritan lifestyle of the day. The supplementation of the orderly and proper with the disorderly and immoral is not inherently bad. While Goodman Brown is the protagonist of the story, his ending is not a good one. The complete betrayal felt by his community and his unreliability in deciding which events were true or not make him an excellent example of an unstable character. His decaying mental fortitude is highlighted by the conscious decision to never treat his community the same, even though he cannot determine what is truly real. 
The normality of the other characters presents a psychological battle for the main character, even though his final choice is to die distrusting anyone else after years of isolating himself from the false community.

The first half of the story is about defending the actions that the narrator committed in the second half. The Imp caught up to the narrator and caused them to reveal themselves as the murderer.
